video card/lcd woes

I recently bought a 20.1 lcd for a computer that has a geforce 5200 fx. There are two outputs on the back and I wanted to do the dual monitor thing but when I try to go to a resolution above 1200x1024 the video gets all screwed up and I can't see anything. Why is this and how can I fix it?

I've also noticed that when I have both monitors hooked up I can't see them in the display settings, it only shows the one monitor. The only way that I can get both monitors is when I enable it using the nvidia options.

Are you using two lcd monitors? The reason is most likely b/c one monitor is analog and the other is digital. Two signals can't be displyed simultaneously if I'm not mistaken. The gf5200 doesn't have dual dvi.

Right, the gf5200 has a vga and a dvi but this is for a lab and a neighboring lab has a video card with a dvi and a vga and they have the dual monitor thing going on. For what it is worth the computer is running windows xp sp1. I could try updating it but I would prefer not to unless that probably is the cause of the problem (just because this computer is really important and I can't really afford to have it go down or stop working).

I bought a sceptre 20.1 lcd: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824112176
and I had an NEC 1970nx before.

Why the fvck have you not installed SP2. Do that first and we will go from there. There is no reason not to install it.

This instrument was delivered with sp1 just a few months ago so I thought that maybe the software they made wasn't compatible with sp2. I guess I can always uninstall it if it stops working.

SP2 has been out for 1-2 years now

Exactly, that's why I thought there might be a purpose for not installing it when it was delivered. Whatever though, sp2 is way better then sp1, I'll pull the trigger. Thanks!

Okay it is still installing but I noticed one thing that is bizzare. When I am logged in as the admin the screen spanning works correctly but the new monitor can't display its native resolution. It still gets all screwed up but when I'm at the higher resolution and then check to see what resolution the monitor thinks it is in through the osd display it doesn't think it is in the higher one. Why is this? Additionally, I had to put the native display as a custom one because it didn't have it enabled by default.

I updated to sp2 and I still have the same problem. The main issue is the one listed above where it gets all garbeled when I switch the dvi monitor to its native resolution. I think the problem might be the the monitor isn't recognizing to go to the higher resolution because when I look on the osd it doesn't recognize that it is at a higher resolution. What should I do?
