2 Days ago i was playing ps with kat, apollon, zehdd (we were skyguard pwning), and some others such as shadow, and all of a sudden after about 2 hours of playing my game started HEAVY stuttering. For example, if i was in game it would freeze for 10 seconds, come back for 10, and id lose it again. Continously. So i said damn you planetside! So i rebooted thinking it was a normal ps being a pain in the ass thing.

Rebooted came back, turned on ps and same thing happened. I thought it was odd that it kept happening, i mentioned it in outfit chat and said ill be back in 20 minutes after i virusscan, spybot, and ad-aware.

So i updated all 3 and did the scanning bit. Got some spyware progs, nothing big. Got rid of all of them, and there was an instance of a spybot which i also got rid of. And yet no virus's.

So I try planetside again. Freezes before in game (loading screen) and and more frequent, only 1 second pauses in between each freeze. Alt F4'd out, and just to make sure it wasnt ps. Tryed UT2K4, which also had the same problem. At first this reminded me of other problems people had in which their vid card was overheating.

I opened up my beastly case to check out my monster 6800 GT ... And everything was working just fine, nothing abnormal hardware wise. But i made sure the vid card was in there snugly. Which it was. So I went back and fiddled with software stuff to make sure that wasnt my issue.

And it slowly got worse and worse everytime i rebooted. Until i couldn't see at all, popped in my old NVidia MX400 and my comp worked fine, except for the fact that those gfx suck ass. So I formatted my comp (lost all my music *tear*)...And the 6800 still no worky.

So im asking if any of you have any suggestions, i made sure the 6800 was getting adequate power (which if you dont have the plug in it makes an ungodly high pitched beep, so i do not think that is my problem), and it's in all the way. And the card isnt overheating because i even let it sit overnight.

I am going to try screwing with it later, and my friend is coming over to screw with it also, and we will probably put it in his comp, just to see if the card is screwed up.

Any other suggestions or anyone have any troubles of this nature.

Oh and i forgot to mention i also tryed the newest drivers and nothing.

dont know if this will help but you can usually tell if its overheating by putting a finger on the heatsink or whatever immediately after you shut off the comp. overheating = probem, not overheating = bigger problem

This sounds like a problem I had with my older GeForce 4 Ti4600. I would play UT2K4 or any other game, and experience freezes every 5-10 secs. Use Motherboard Monitor or the monitoring software that came with your motherboard to check the voltages on the 3v, 5v and 12v lines. A vid card like the 6800 GT will pull quite a bit of power from all 3 lines and if they are out of threshold it could be the source of your problem. If there doesn't appear to be any problem with the voltages try a new driver set. I had a bunch of problems with the 61.77 drivers and had to experiment with others in order to eliminate lockups.

6800GT's are well known for overclockability.....was it overclocked......didn't read anything that said it wasn't!

No it was not overclocked sorry for not mentioning that. And I tryed the drivers that came with my card, and the new online drivers oneiros.

And what exactly is the 3v, 5v, and 12v lines? Are they all from the PSU or are they from those batteries on the mobo. I installed MSI Core Cell to check the readout on those, but they seem rather steady in the 5% margin of error. Although that's at idle, so i don't know if thats my problem or not, I will check it out when im done putting it in my friends computer.

But if thats the case that my lines are too low, too high, etc. What would be the solution to that problem? New PSU? (480 Watt brand new Thermaltake) or a better socket from the wall(i.e. not plugged into the surge protector with all my other stuff)?

Alrightyo
Update:
Tryed plugging computer into a different wall socket, and apparently we have good house elexctric. No fix

Tested a spare molex 12v for power. And i got 11.99, whereas corecell tells me im only getting 11.73 in windows. And the MX400 card runs at around 11.56 when in game and i alt tab.

Turned off computer booted and read the 12v molex while booting, 12.06v

Disconnected all perephials. Same readings.

My hypothesis :
Something is borked with the motherboard
Card is ultraborked

Next test :
Try it in a friends computer.

Friend still isnt back from vacation, so i cannot test it in his computer yet, although someone told me that my ram may have been taking too much power (4 sticks of 256mb), because there may have been conflicts over which is primary or something of the sort. I forget the exact phraseage, but I took all my ram out and replaced it with one 512 stick.

Video card still no worky.

As i continue troubleshooting and knocking things down that it isnt, im starting to think that my card just ... died. But what would cause a 6800 GT running stock to just die out've nowhere?

Yeah just an update the card was the thing at fault. Tryed it in friends pc and no worky
Only thing is why would the card just crap out after 2 weeks of using it
