Video card, HDMI and 1920x1200

Hi all, I recently hooked up my computer using an ATI 4550 HDMI (has DVI as well) directly to my 28.5 Viewsonic 1920x1200 monitor via HDMI cable. NO MATTER what I do or try, whatever setting, the resoltion is all messed up. The ATI drivers realize my monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200 but it wont look right.

It looked perfect on my other monitor which is a 1080p resolution. So I grabbed a DVI to HDMI cable and it looks perfect. Thus my question... why does an HDMI cable NOT support 1920x1200?? I thought HDMI and DVI were the exact same video wise... just HDMI has sound added.

Do HDMI cables not support higher res than 1920x1080? I have tried a 10$ HDMI cable and a $80 one. Both give the same result -- everything is distorted and moved around.

Most likely the video card thinks your monitor is a HD TV and is outputting a different signal. I have the same problem with the combination of my monitor and video card (nvidia). To fix it, I have to overwrite some registry values for the video driver. Idk how to fix it on ATi. Have you tried playing around with settings in the ATi Control Center?
