Video card going bad? (Looks like it was the monitor)

For some reason, this happens to me 3 times as much as happens to my wife yet we use the computer roughly the same.

I can be surfing the web, reading something or just watching a movie and then all of a sudden I have a black screen. I hit the shift keys and move the mouse and nothing. Roughly 4 seconds later the screen comes back like nothing happened.

Video card Sapphire Radeon 9100 64MB
OS W2K sp3
latest Catalyst drivers

That happened recently to my Asus GeForce 4 Ti4200, started getting a couple seconds of black screen while surfing the interent. Noticed corrupt looking screens at boot up. The fan quit on the card and it probably cooked itself to death. NOT GOOD. I think I'm SOL... looking for a replacement and using my old Tualatin computer for now.

Check the cooling fan if it has one. What PS are you using?

fan is on, a 400 watt Deere (Amd approved)

I've never even *heard* of "Deere" power supplies (of course, that may be good, considering how often brands like PowMax come up here). I'd start by replacing that and seeing if your situation improves.

Deere, .... I thought they made green lawn mowers and tractors.

dude, I have a 10 year old ati/phillips/intel bb sony card that still works flawlessly for surfing, so age of card probably not it.

I'd tend to suspect the monitor before the video card.

Me too.

Now that you mention it...me too.

I suspected it was the video card because it started happening when I got the new card. I ordered another video card so I will swap it out and see. Thanks for the feedback
