I've seen this happen a few times....
I'm pretty sure what Vikaden said is right. Whatever type of card it is, go to that manufacturer's site and download their latest drivers. Some people seem to have problems with the reference drivers for some reason...not really sure why. My friend just had the same problem you described a week ago when he put in a Elsa Erazor X (1st gen. Geforce). When we updated the drivers with the latest from Elsa the problem was instantly solved. Hope this works for you.
