video card for Samsung 56" DLP TV

My son recently purchased a Samsung 56" DLP TV. It has a split screen to watch TV and surf the net. He now hooks up an IBM laptop to access the net with a new wireless mouse and keybaord. He says he will never use a computer monitor again. He has asked me to build him a computer to attach to this DLP TV. I have built only one athlon system in my entire life with the help of you guys. I most likely know enough to get myself into trouble.

The components I have decided on so far is a Abit NF7-S rev.2.0 motherboard, AMD Athalon XP 2500 Barton 333FSB, and 526 megs of ram that is 2700 or maybe 3200.

My big question is the video card to purchase????? I am currently looking at ATI All in Wonder cards that can record TV. Mainly the Radeon 9700 non-pro 128 mg for $295 and the 9800 pro (oem or retail......what is the difference) for around $373 and $385 at newegg. I have been searching this forum and realize these cards are tricky to install with windows XP. There is also a huge price difference between the 9700 and the 9800. Is the 9800 worth the extra money? Which is easier to install?

Does anyone have any other suggestions on other brands of video cards that capture TV? Would it be better to just get a good video card with a separate video capture card?

I will most likely build this computer as a gift for my son. He bought his TV with a bonus check from work. Nobody is giving me any bonus check.

WTF? What resolution is he surfing at? That's a kickass TV, but to use it in place of a computer monitor?

He's probably still ga-ga over the TV. Intime he'll probably realize that it's not the greatest of thing for browsing.

Anyways, to answer your question... AIW is more difficult to install on WinXP? I've never had a problem personally.

And as for 9700-9800... i would go for the 9700 if he's not big on gaming.

No, no. The Samsung DLPs are the best big screen PC displays I've ever seen. They're made for it.

That DLP has a VGA port, so it doesn't particularly matter what kind of card you get. For best bang for the buck, a 9700 or 9800 non-pro are fine. 9700np is more than fast enough.

Samsung HLN567WX/XAA 56" 16:9 HD Ready DLP Television
HDTV monitor (tuner required for HD reception) ? 16:9 widescreen DLP projection design with slim cabinet ? Automatic Digital Format Conversion (converts all signals to 720p) ? Faroudja DCDi de-interlacer with 3-2 pulldown processing ? 3 component video inputs (2 HD-compatible and 1 480i/480p) ? one DVI input ? PC input

My son says he hooks up his laptop like one would a computer monitor. It has a split screen. He doesn't have a progressive scan dvd player. I was hoping that a computer with a good tv capture video card and dvd player would eliminate the need for a dvd player. I also asked him if he would be doing any gaming. He said that was a possibility.

He says HDTV channels are awesome, but he can see all the flaws in analog signals. VCD and SVCD movies are "ok". I was hoping they would look better with a better video card. Thanks for the imput
