Since NT 4.0 does not suppor DirectX, does it mean that when choosing video card for NT4 workstation, the 3D potential of the video card is completely useless? I'm assembling a quite a few NT4 PCs for office use. Though a better video card is preferred, could the cheapest one (S3 trio 3D, TNT2 vanta, etc) be enough, and performs the same as a GeForce 2 MX in NT4?

NT 4.0 does support DirectX 3.0 as long as it has SP4 and up.
Just don't waste your time on AGP cards because while AGP cards will work in NT , NT does not take advantage of the technology. So save some money and get a PCI card.
Theer are some tricks to use DirectX 5 but they are usually more trouble than they are worth

OpenGL runs better under NT then 9X. If you don't run any OpenGL applications then this won't mean much. NT was becoming the platform of choice for pro 3D until the launch of Win2K, it just never was very good for gaming(outside of Quake engined and a few other titles).
