I'm planning on a linux/ubuntu build, primarily for java development. I want to support dual monitors in an extended desktop scenario. The motherboard I am considering has no onboard video. So, which video card will be sufficient and have good driver support?

I don't [think] I need a professional card. The most demanding thing I might do is possibly dual-boot into XP so my kid can play the online lego MMO, and I would like to try out torchlight. Other than that, it will all be text editing and webbrowser. Little to no gaming, and no 3d workstation type stuff.

Since your running linux I would shy away from AMD/ATI. They don't have good linux support. As for the precise card, a sub $100 card should do just fine. I played Lego Star Wars with an ATI 3650 with everything maxed so I can't imagine the MMO is any more stressful. I would say a GT430 or 450 would fit your needs.

Any card from the last 3-4 years would do you fine - get an nVidia card - their Linux driver are far better than ATI/AMD. 9600-9800GT should be fine.

Yeah, GTS450 would be good. I hestiate to recommend anything older, since the price is probably comparable, for an old 8800/9800GT.
