Video card fan died (monitor to blame?)

My stock 9800 pro's fan stopped working.

I started noticing artifacts about 10 minutes into a game. I exited out and checked out my video card and I noticed the fan wasn't spinning. I touched the hsf and it was blistering hot. I powered down and let it cool. Powered back up and it still wasn't spinning. Powered down, reinstalled video card to no avail. I installed a new monitor (viewsonic e70f+sb) the day before and played the same game (dod) fine for about an hour or more with no artifacts whatsoever. I have no idea how long the fan was off before the artifacts appeared, but it couldn't have been for more than a day. In that time, all it was used for was browsing and music.. nothing graphic intensive. I hope I didn't damage it. It seemed to be working fine except for the artifacts.

When I installed the monitor, I didn't power down my computer (never have for monitors). Think maybe that had something to do with it or was it just a coincidence? Any other possible factors?

Right now i'm on an old radeon card that's running slow because I couldn't be bothered to change drivers since hopefully i'll have my card back in a couple of days. I'm probably going to order a VGA Silencer 3 from the egg to replace the stock hsf. Think that's all that needs to be done? I've read the stock hsf on the 9800 pros have a tendency to fail. Is that right?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Can anyone second that?

Just in case, I googled for "installing monitor" like a tard and read a couple of shorts guides. All of which said POWER DOWN FIRST heh.. that's what got me worried.

fyi the monitor is 4 days old and the video card is ~4 months old.

Any quick guides around for replacing the hsf? I've done everything to a computer but that. Never really needed to until now.

coincidence for sure.....no way can a monitor bust a fan. those 9800pro HSF really arent the best of designs or quality.....its time to grab an Ati silencer or a Zalman VF700

Yeah, my ATI-built 9800Pro pos fan died recently as well. I at least heard it going, the noise began oscillating up and and down badly just before it went out, so I had time to get the VGA Silencer from newegg.

Work like a champ now and actually keeps my case (slightly) cooler because of the rear exhaust of the video card heat.
