This happened a few months ago, but mysteriously went away. Here's the symptoms

Shut down, everything was fine.Boot up.*12hrs later. HUGE, 640x480. Right click to go to desktop properties, clicking properties causes BSOD. Shows unload of driver, "this driver may be the cause". Now i am in VGA mode.

I am running win2k, Matrox G400 graphics card,

I would just see if there are new drivers for the video card and try to install them. Should fix the problem you are having.

yeah i am figuring so... i figured i'd reinstall whatever drivers were available and that would fix it, but it turns out there is a new driver (suprising since the card is 4 years old)

yeah, matrox seems to be putting out more driver updates for its G4xx series cards than its flagship Parhelia!
