Video Card Driver Headaches!

First, some history:

1. Got a beautiful new 1680x1050 LCD monitor.

2. Purchased a new nVidia GeForce FX5200 AGP card for my old computer so I could plug the monitor into the card's DVI port. [I do not play computer games.]

3. Installed the latest nVidia graphics "ForceWare" driver for my new video card and my old OS (Windows ME).

4. Noticed that the card's maximum resolution on my system was 1600 x 1024 (via both VGA & DVI ports). Internet research and forum responses led me to believe that the max DVI resolution of a Fx5200 card should be 1600x1200, which is more than I was getting but less than I need. [Newegg and the video card manufacturer's website lists the max resolution of this card as 2048 x 1536, which is why I thought it could support my monitor's native resolution.]

5. Purchased a new nVidia GeForce 6200 AGP card which multiple sources indicated should be capable of 1680x1050 resolution. Confirmed that the latest nVidia Forceware driver for this card and my OS is the same as for the Fx5200 card.

6. Noticed that the GeForce 6200 card's maximum resolution on my system was 1600 x 1024 (via both VGA & DVI ports)...same as the FX5200 card. Was told I should try installing the latest nVidia "WDM Driver" for the GeForce 6200 to obtain higher resolutions. My computer did not like this driver, crashing and generating error messages during the installation and thereafter. When I did manage to get the display working, it still had a max resolution of 1600 x 1024. Although the WDM driver was listed in the Add/Remove programs list, I'm not sure whether it was ever completely installed. Since it did not help, I uninstalled it.

7. I noticed that the GeForce Fx5200 card used a different WDM driver (but the same graphics "ForceWare" driver). I decided to try replacing my 6200 card with the Fx5200 card and installing the Fx5200 WDM driver. My computer accepted this WDM driver with no crashes or error messages. The driver also made no difference in the max resolution.

8. I uninstalled the FX5200 WDM driver in preperation for replacing my FX5200 card with my 6200 card.

9. After installing the 6200 card, my computer kept crashing and generating an error message indicating that my display driver was not operating properly. The only way I could get any picture at all was to boot up in safe mode.

10. I decided that the installation and uninstallation of the WDM drivers may have somehow corrupted the nVidia Forceware graphics driver. So I tried to uninstall this driver in order to re-install it. Every time I try to uninstall the driver, however, I get the error message "Nvudisp has caused an error in NVUDISP.EXE" and the driver remains installed.

11. I tried running Scandisk and disk defrag programs [in safe mode] in hope this might enable me to uninstall the forceware driver, but this did not help.

12. I tried reinstalling the forceware driver on top of itself (overwriting all the files), but this made no difference. Although the reinstallation appeared to go smoothly, the 6200 card still would not function and I still got error messages saying my display driver was malfunctioning. The forceware driver also continued to resist all attempts to uninstall it.

13. In desperation, I tried replacing my 6200 card with my Fx5200 card (which uses the same Forceware driver). The Fx5200 card is working as good as ever...still with a max resolution of 1600 x 1024. Every attempt to uninstall the Forceware driver still fails, resulting in the error message: "Nvudisp has caused an error in NVUDISP.EXE"

Is there anything I can do to get the 6200 card working again?

If I can't get this 6200 card working, does that mean all GeForce 6 series cards are likely to malfunction on my system?

Any idea why my system will not allow video cards or drivers to generate resolutions higher than 1600 x 1024?

Try to uninstall the drivers first, then use DriverCleaner booting in Safe Mode, since you have issues uninstalling nVidia Drivers, this little utility will delete all the driver files and some old files left during uninstallation. Then boot normally and install the latest drivers from the nVidia website. and good luck!!

I checked out the "drivercleaner" website and it says the program works with Windows XP and Vista. My OS is Windows ME.
