Ok, this finially got to me enough to post this... A few months back I got a X800 XL (AGP) and runs great.
The problem is whenever I goto update the drivers Windows wont boot between the removal of the old drivers, and the installation of the new ones. My display freezes showing "BOOT FROM CD:"... you know the last line of the Post before the Win XP loading logo shows up. It does not get far enough to allow for f8 to boot to safe mode....i.e., windows doesn't load, but the post routine is done... the motherboard code shows a successful boot. (code FF on Abit AV8)... it just hangs (using digital or analog outputs). The only way I can actually get windows to load is to remove my x800 and install an older card (ti4600, g400, and geforce2something cards all work), let windows load up the generic VGA adapter driver, then swap the cards back out. I also had this issue during the first install of the card, but chalked it up to motherboard flex, and went on with life.
For example, here's what I went through tonight to get catalyst 5.10 installed:
Boot to safe mode as admin.
Uninstall catalyst 5.8 via add/remove.
Reboot into safe mode as admin.
Run driver cleaner to eliminate all things ATI.
reboot and suffer the above lock-up.
power down and replace the x800 with any other AGP card.
Boot into windows, cancel the Generic driver, Install the Cat 5.10 stuff.
Power down, put the x800 back in.
Boot up and suffer the lock-up.
Power down, re-seat the x800.
Bootup and suffer the lock-up
Repeat above two lines 15+ times.
Power down, take the x800 out.
Bootup and let windows install the VGA generic driver, let catalyst yell at me for no ati card.
Power down and put the x800 in.
Bootup and update the drivers to those installed, now everything works.
I made it more work by not installing the generic the first time around because I wanted to eliminate the 'card not properly seated' issue....I really don't understand whats going on here.
It shouldn't be a power issue, it runs fine once it's running.
I doubt it's a 'card-seating' or mobo-flex issue, otherwise I would have lucked out once.
Sorry for the rambling... anyone have any idea what's going on with this?
The only thing left that I can think of is the VIA AGP driver, which if I remember right, ABIT says not to install with SP2.... But how can it be a mobo driver issue when it works just fine after the card-swap?
