Video card dilemma

I missed the boat on the highly recommended eVGA 7900GTO (unless they get some more in stock).
SO I was looking around and saw the eVGA 7950GT.

Not looking to spend more than $300 so is the 7950GT as good as the 7900GTO? I have almost decided the other main components but the video card is the most difficult to me. I do not play alot of games but want something that will perform if I get the urge.

Any other suggestions?

It's not as good, but it's still an excellent card. If you can find ANY way to get the GTO, though, go for it.

Do you have a good recommendation of one that is on par with the GTO and maybe what the next one up would be?

Wait a minute. Let's put this into perspective. The 7950GT at STOCK performs close to the 7900GTO but, trails it slightly. The EVGA 7950GT KO SC card that you listed will almost certainly surpass the 7900GTO at stock so, I'd say it's a good alternative. The heatsink on that card is copper and it's known to be quieter and more effective at cooling than the Nvidia reference design as well.

The 7900GTO is out of stock everywhere and no one knows when they'll come back.

I just RMA'd my 7900GTO (was damaged during shipment :() and took this EVGA 7950GT KO SC instead because I believe it will perform just as well if not better than the 7900GTO it's replacing.

Edit: Here's a link to a site that has benches of the 7900GTO, 7950GT (at stock) and several other cards to compare. It's in French so you won't be able to read the commentary (unless you're fluent in French) but, the benches speak for themselves.

Have you received your 7950 yet? Just curious what gaes you play and how it does?

I' just getting tired of waiting for the new stuff and for these prices to drop.

What is the next level up from the two I listed so I can keep an eye on their prices when the new cards are released?

I finally received the new video card tonight. It's a EVGA 7950GT KO SC. I haven't had a chance to play any games on it yet but, will soon ;). So far, my first impression of it is good. The heatsink is copper and it covers all of the memory modules. It has a very quiet fan at idle. It's idling at 49C. The way the copper fins are positioned on the heatsink it kind of reminds me of the Zalman cooler. I'll let you know how it performs later when I get a chance to stretch it's legs.

I kinda wanted to go woth an evga card in case I decide to upgrade in the next few months. What is the best evga card out right now besides the 8800gts/x?

The X1950pro competes in performance with the 7900GS. It does not "beat up" any 7950GT.

Show me an X1900XT 256MB in stock for $250 and I'll buy it. Otherwise, the 7950GT KO SC is the next best card at that price point.

I've only had a chance to play a few hours of Half Life 2: Episode 1. It performed very well in that game and I'm happy with the card. Unfortunately, I had to RMA my RAM so my PC has been offline for the last week. :(

I know you already bought a 7950GT, but I have a suggestion for future reference.

The reason you you can't find a X1900XT in stock or for very cheap is because ATI/AMD released the X1950XT last month. It's supposed to be 12% or so faster, though there haven't been any reviews on it yet. It's based off of the X1950XTX, the only diff is that the XT has a different cooler, 256MB GDDR3 instead of 512MB GDDR4, and slightly slower clocks. Newegg has a couple listed for $269 here Since the X1900XT already beats a 7950GT in most benches, the X1950XT would've been a MUCH better deal.

Azndude51 - you're right. I had no idea the 256MB x1950xt's had finally arrived. When my 7900GTO died there were no more in stock and newegg and there were no 256MB versions of the x1900xt or x1950xts so I got the next best thing as a replacement. The x1950xt @ $260 is a better performer than the 7950GT.

But know one really knows exactly how much faster the X1950XT is compared to the X1900XT until a review comes out. The X1950XT has a different core (R580+) along with the faster clocked RAM/increased memory bandwidth.
