Video Card Dilemma

Motherboard: GigabyteGA-8knxp Rev. 1x
Processor: Pentium 2.8 GHz
Sound card: Sound blaster audigy gamer
Memory: 1 GHz DDR pc3200
Video card: ATI 9600 Pro

I want to upgrade my video card but my motherboard only supports APG 8x. I have bought two video cards in one year. It?s seems that every time a new game comes out that I want to play I have to buy a new video card. I am really sick of buying video cards.

The best video card that I found (because I don?t know what I am doing) is Radeon x800xl 256 APG.

Would I be better off upgrading the motherboard to a board that offers PCI express and buying the Radeon x1900 or just upgrading the video card that I have now to the Radeon x800xl?

Is there a better video card for this motherboard?

Thanks

The X800XL would be a good upgrade. How much are you paying for it?

If he's paying $300, he should get that 7800GS Superclock. It is significantly faster than a radeon X800XL. Someone on a newegg review said that the 7800GS superclock made a huge difference from his 9600pro, so I would go with the 7800GS. It has Shader Model 3.0 and Transparancy Antialiasing, a feature you'll only find in Geforce 7 cards.

anybody can write anything on newegg...i would take their advice with a grain of salt. imo $200 is the sweet spot. i would look for a used x800xt/x800xtpe/x850xtpe. going a 7800GS is a total waste and insulting when you consider it is not as good as a 7800GT but more expensive.

But if he's paying $300 for a X800XL, he should be able to pay $20 and get something significantly faster. Also, newegg tightly regulates their reviews, so you can't just go up and say that a certain product gave you a boost without owning it. They check for signs that you're saying a bunch of crap.

Here's a good benchmark that proves the 7800GS's greatness: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evg...800_gs_co_superclock_review/page18.asp

he shouldn't pay $300, that is what i said, he should pay at most $200.

newegg reviews are not the "bomb" and neither is the 7800GS. at stock speeds it is just a bit faster than the x800xt/x850xt series.

Both cards Radeon x800xl 256 APG and Geforce 7800GS are the same price for me ($249.00) I am using my rewards at Circuit City for a $50.00 discount.

You have to run driver cleaner(Download here: http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html) and uninstall your ATI Drivers using control panal first. Then you go into driver cleaner and have it clean all of your ATI display drivers(google that information up) 2 times to make sure ALL residue is gone(or you'll face instability problems) and then install your Geforce card and then go and download the latest drivers.

Yeah definitely get the 7800GS if it's the same price as the X800XL, as their not even in the same league. (X850XT PE is more on par with the GS)

i would agree to to get the 7800GS since they are the same price and you are not going to upgrade.

[rant]
i just am kind of p!ssed at nvidia atm because the agp bus could handle the 7800GT/GTX and probably 7800GTX 512 bandwidth needs and are instead offering this neurtered card that is equal to ati cards that are 1.2-1.5 yrs old....
[/end rant]

for ~$500 you could go a 7800GT/mb/skt939 cpu......

keep your same ram, be better off in the long run...

I'm still at it.

Just a little confused. The game that I am upgrading for is The Elderscrolls Oblivion. The GeForce 7800GS is listed as a recommended video card but it is listed three times and it looks like there are serval 7800 GS cards.

High end video cards:
GeForce 7800GS (stock clock; 375MHz core)
GeForce 7800GS (overclocked version; 400-430MHz core)

Under super high end video cards:
GeForce 7800GS (superclock version; 460MHz core, 1350MHz memory)

This is the card I am thinking about buy if it is the right one eVGA e-GeForce? 7800 GS Video Card (256-A8-N506)
listed at circuitcity.com.

Could someone tell me if this is one of the recommend cards and which one it is?

Thanks

i would go to their forums and ask what other run gpu wise. the problem is that it says it supports many different cards and its recommendations are:
* 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 1 GB System RAM
* ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

the problem is that the ati x800 series has at least 4 cards in it and the 6800 has about the same. if you go the 7800gs you would be a little higher than a 6800ultra or x850xt (approximately).

at this point anything you do will be better than the 9600pro you are using now if that helps.

the 7800gs will be good but i don't know for how long, and then you paid $250 for a agp card and the next upgrade you will definately need pci-e, that is why i suggested possibly doing the upgrade now if you possibly can. evga has a deal where you can get a 7800gt and nf4 sli m/b combo for ~$350, then throw in another $200 for a cpu and you are at $550, which is not too bad, imo. the nice thing is that you could possibly, if the game supports it which it should but i don't know sh!t about rpgs, do sli in the future for just another 7800gt, which in a year they will be pretty cheap. normally i don't suggest sli but the 2x7800gts are a killer deal.
