Here is my story .....
I had a Geforce 5900 Ultra and the whole time I owned it everyone was raving about the ATI 9800 series.
When I heard the news of the Radeon X800 XT as the card to have I ordered it. Now Doom 3 is in and the performance king is now the Geforce 6800 Ultra.

Should I sell the X800 XT and get the Geforce 6800 Ultra or wait for the next batch of cards?

Maybe someday I will make the right choice.

What do you think?

Although the 6800's are obviously the "Doom 3 Cards," I haven't read of any complaints about D3's playability with the X800's, and there's still the possibility that it could outperform the 6800's in HL2. There are the games based on these engines to consider also. My vote is that it wouldn't be worth the hassle of selling it, but you could probably make a hunk of cash selling it on eBay as they are still in pretty high demand.

You did not make a wrong choice. The X800XT is a monster card and capable of running Doom3 just fine at 1600x1200. Yes it gets brutalized by the 6800 series, but the game caps at 60fps so you wont notice a difference. You will be just fine with your card. If you suffer from video card "envy" then your only solution would be to buy both your X800XTPE and a 6800UE so that nobody can say they have something better than you for at least 4 months. ;)

As opposed many ppl will say that you have the fastest card right now.
Why don't you believe them?
DoomIII makes a difference in Nvidia cards and if it's the only game you care about then you're right.
But saying you made the wrong choice is way wrong. X800XT is a killer card. Wait for HL2 and you'll see.

Thanks Guys
I think I will keep it.

I preordered Doom 3 a year ago from Amazon it is in the mail now. I will never preorder a game again you actually get the card after it is in the stores.

That's terrible, Doom3 did take way too long!

It it makes you feel any better, apart from doom 3, X800xt is overall a faster card with Quality settings enabled (AA/AF).

In most games where 6800ultra is faster, x800xt is already playable anyways. But in some games like IL-2 Sturmovik and Perimeter, X800xt clearly dominates, when the 6800 series are just lagging.

Besides do you really think doom 3 is THAT GOOD? It seems to be more hype than gameplay but I will reserve my judgment until I play it myself.

Fastest Graphics Cards of Summer 2004

The primary reasons why no one is raving about x800xt are:

1. Most people cannot afford to spend $500-550 on a videocard.
2. If a consumer is willing to spend above $300, most will buy 6800Gt and overclock it to Ultra speeds.
3. X800xt is very hard to find on the market making it hard to purchase "physically"

But if I could have 1 card out now, I'd take x800xt pe.

Changing your X800 card for a game that will be forgotten in two or three months. No way?, besides I'm sure that Doom 3 engine could be improved to bo more efficient. So your X800 will be fine for the upcoming games.

Hah! I had a similar story.. I ALWAYS purchased Nvidia products, then I decided to get a 9800Pro because everyone was raving about it... I had nothing but trouble with my 9800Pro, I had to RMA it once for a new one, then I always had to switch drivers depending on what batch of games I wanted to play on a given week.. Boy, did that suck!

So I finally sold it, went back to Nvidia and picked up the 6800 and i'm loving it.

sure ur card runs slower than the 6800 series in Doom, but you can still turn up all the settings and play,so I dont see a problem with keeping it. And remember that its just one game, in other games the x800xt runs just as fast as the 6800ultra, sometimes even faster. Also, Ati has begun to work on their opengl drivers, so performance is likely to improve.
