Video card compatibility

This may be a silly question but here goes anyway.

Can you run a ATI 4xxx X2 video card in a non-crossfire motherboard?

I don't have the money to buy two Nvidia cards to run SLI so I was thinking of running just one X2 card with an ATI chipset.

I play all kinds of games like TF2, Half-Life 2, Supreme Commander, Witcher, etc. and am trying to build up a new system.
