Video card choices

at notch above...maybe x700...but if you want the value for your money get an x800 pro or x800xl. both are priced very competitively.

There's also a regular x800 with 12pipes and 128MBs ram which sells for just under $200. I believe it's pci-e only, though. I was bored the other night so I bought one 😱 - should be here tomorrow.

well, the 9800 pro was released in 2003? with a price tag of $350. Now with that mentality, the x800pros are $300 and less. Those should be good.
Even the fastest card (I think it still is) X850xt Plat Ed. is ~$450 and still in agp 8x.

A notch? I'd say the 6600gt (nvidia) is a good notch above. It outperforms the 9800 and has Shader model 3.0 (something the x800 cards dont have)

Don't limit yourself to ATi cards. In fact, you could consider a next gen card.

Click the Video tab at the top of the page, and look at benchmarks of Doom3, Half-life 2, and Far Cry since those use "modern" 3D rendering more than most others.

Something to consider is what screen resolution you want to game at. The $150-200 cards do great at 1024x768 and in some cases at 1280x1024. The $300 cards are solid at 1280x1024 and sometimes 1600x1200, but for consistent 1600x1200 you need the top of the line cards or to wait for the next generation of midrange cards.
