The X800XL and the X800XT both have 16 pipelines, so they are the "preferred". I believe the only real difference between the two is the clock speeds. As far as the X800Pro or even the X850Pro are concerned, they are both 12 pipelines, so they are really a waste of money ($400), when you can get an X800XL for $100 less, and better performance.

Basically X800XL is > than X800Pro and X850Pro but < X800XT, X850XT, X800XT PE and X850 XT PE

X800XL = 16 pipelines 400mhz gpu speed 980 memory
x800xt = 16, 500mhz 1000 memory
x800pro = 12, 475mhz gpu, 900 memory (i think).

You can't really judge a graphics card by it's clcok speeds to much, and your x300 is not as fast becsue it does not have as many piplines. A x800xl is the best choice for you.

Once again, I have to agree (Damn, I don't like recommending ATI cards :p ).

also consider a 6800GT, but if you want to be a fanboi and not consider other companies, thats your loss

Good point but:

6800GT AGP is $340 => no X800XL AGPs are currently available and X800Pro AGP is >$340 and is slower = hence 6800GT is better

now

PCIe 6800Gt is like $390 but x800xl PCIe is $305. I wouldnt pay $85 extra for 6800Gt over X800xl given XL's already good performance.

Fanboism aside => 6800GT for AGP and x800xl for PCIe are good upper-midrange choices for gamers right now.
