Video Card - Best Single Slot GPU

Ok, I have a Dell Optiplex 745 which I got from Dell because of a price error on there part. The main specs you need to know are E6700 and 1gig of Ram.

I currently have a 6600gt 128mb, but want something better. The case/mobo only have 1 PCI E slot, and there is no room for a 2 slot video card. The upper most slot is the PCIE slot, leaving no room for the cooling solution that requires a second slot. The mother board also may get in the way slightly. I wanted to get a 8800gts 320mb until I realized that I would not be able to fit the card into my case. I've looked at site after site and want the best bang for buck I can get. I mainly play Counter-Strike Source, but I may play other games down the road. I've looked at X1650pro, X1950pro, 7600GT, 7900gs, and 7950GT. I want as much performance as I can get, but I'm looking at value more than anything. My 6600gt plays source well, but I want a more steady FPS, and don't want dips during times with lots of smoke or explosions.

What single slot GPU is the best card for the money? Not that money is an issue, but I want something that is the best price/performance ratio. I've been told that ATI plays source better, however I haven't used an ATI solution since an 8500. I am pro Nvidia, but in the $150 price bracket it looks like the X1950 is champ with equal clock speeds and 36 pixel shaders. I would like to hear as many personal opinions and suggestions as I can. I will consider all the advice in effort to help me make my purchase. All you pro's out there, I greatly appreciate your help!

If you need any further information, just ask. I would love to find a way to get a bigger card in this beast, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

We also need to know you power supply specs. How many amps on the 12v+ rail and wattage.

Edit: After looking on Dell's web site , my guess is you have a 305 watt power supply.
So the best 1 slot low power consumption card is the 7950gt for you. It should be 3x faster then what your using now.

If I'm reading the Power Supply correctly, it's difficult to read at the angle I'm at it says +12VA --- 18.0A

Combined Power on 12VA and 12VB was 265W

I only have 1 160GB HD running, and my optical drive is External USB. Basically the only thing it's going to power is the Mobo, CPU, HD and Video Card.

Read my edit in my last post. Yea by the way even a 7900gs will double your framerate if your want something cheaper. The 7950gt should be about 180.00$ 7900gs 140.00$ or so.

Thanks for the information, do you think the X1950pro would be a little much for the Power Supply? I know they draw far more power than there Nvidia counter parts, but I'm curious if it would be enough. I'm seeing 20A+ on the 12V for for the 7900GS Min. specs, which means it's realistically much lower. I'm wondering if the realistic requirements on the X1950pro would be lower as well.

Also how much real world difference is there between a 7950GT compared to the 7900GS?

There is about $60 difference between the two cards. Is the performance worth the extra cost?

Thanks a ton for your help!

I've never owned a 1950pro but from what I read they are very power hungry, run real hot and to much for your power supply.

In order of performance

7950gt
1950pro
7900gs

Is it worth 60 bucks? It does have 512 mb ram for future game compatibility.(Crysis) If your game at 1600x1200 or less. (what monitor do you have?) go for the 7900gs and overclock it. Thats better bang for your buck.

Ok, so ATI X1950pro would probably be a bad idea with the Power Supply I have.

I'm using an LG L194WT. Playing @ 1440x900 WS.

FYI I love this monitor for anyone looking. 19 inch widescreen w/ 2000:1 Contrast Ratio and 5ms response time. It looks insane, and the performance is even better.

Looks like I need to start searching around for the best 7950GT or 7900GS.

I appreciate your help Happy Medium.

well I don't know much about your PC, but I have x1950 pro (AGP)

I am and using a 460W power supply, with a total of 34A on the 12V rails, no problems so far (it's been about a month now) they recommend 450 watts and 30A on 12V rails for it

my card is long and heavy ( lots a copper on both sides of the card), unsure if you would have room for it, it looks like the card is about 8.5 or 9 inchs long

I have a dell XPS gaming rig, 1st generation. the case is huge, I added one fan and turned the direction of one fan from going in to out , so I have 4 fans going out, the heat is no problem at all for me, but it maybe or you.

usually higher end Dells had very good power supplies, well at least they did in the past, they were not over rated, what they claimed is under rated maybe (a good thing)

do you have a 6600gt or a 6800gt??????

I'm faced with the exact same situation. The Opti 745 was what I have (not what I want, but I'm not complaining...) but due to it's overzealous CPU cooler and bizarre socket placement, no double-slot GPU will fit. I'm returning my GeForce 8800GTS 640Mb PCIe card :(

I'm wondering, SitrukFlow, if you ever got a card, how it fit, if you think it was a good value, etc.? Any feedback from any other folks cramming their "business class" Optis into gaming duty?

You might want to make sure that a standard hieght card will fit. We use Optiplex 745's and have to use a riser card to use full height cards in them.

Another vote for the 7950GT. I could have went with a bigger card, but I only plan on doing some light gaming this summer and I am hoping for a "8950GT" soon.
