system is a 3200+ venice, 1gb of ddr400, dfi ultra infinity, raptor 74 (2.99ms access!), and now i need a decent video card.

im not looking to spend a lot on this computer, but the hard drive speed is very important, which is why i threw in the raptor. if you guys dont like that or think there is another drive thats faster for < 160 then ill change it, but mostly the focus is on the video card here.

it doesnt need to be hardcore. i can go a little above 150 but around there would be nice. any suggestions? i have no preference as far as nvidia vs ati.

edit: ordered the connect3d X800 GTO from the egg for 179 and the silencer 5 v.2 from svc.

I'm in exactly the same situation you are (looking for a new video card in the $150 range), and this is the best deal I've found so far:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220
eVGA 6600GT 128-A8-N350 for $119 after $20 rebate good until November 30th. (free shipping)

Personally I'd rather have a 6800nu (non-ultra) but the cheapest I can find is $165 after rebate and the difference between the two cards just isn't worth an additional $45 to me...

Oops, I just noticed you need PCI-E.

This 6600GT is $129 after rebate at NewEgg: (free shipping)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...30214&ATT=Video+Cards&CMP=OTC-d3alt1me

Or an MSI 6800nu for $150.50 after rebate: (including $2.50 shipping)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...27179&ATT=Video+Cards&CMP=OTC-d3alt1me

In this case, I'd go with the 6800 since (I believe) it has a good chance of unlocking an extra four pixel pipes and a sixth shader, and is only $21 more than the 6600GT.

I'd say the chances of that 6800 unlocking is roughly... zero.

Pci-e 6800nu's do not unlock.

I see what your price range is but rob your piggy bank if you have to and get this GTO2 for $238.99 shipped, in stock as of now @ The'Egg.

is that the cheapest place?

i can probably go that high if this card is worth that much. is there another card in that price range that can do better? would it be worthwhile to just spend like 260 on a card if im already going to spend 240?

The gto2 was a good deal when it was going for $200. At $240 it's not such a good deal. If you're interested in modding a card, then get the connect3d gto. And the gto2 is not even guaranteed to be any better than an unlocked gto - my friend has a gto2, and his gpu tops out around 550, mem about 560. Not as high as my c3d gto.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this card:

It's $180, but it unlocks and OC's to x800xt levels or faster. Blows away anything else for that price.

This is the one to get! Forget the 6800nu, this thing would steam roll it.

Totally forgot about this, good job munky.

ordered this as well as the silencer 5 v.2 since everyone in C&C said it gets hot when you update it
