Step-up is a program exclusive to EVGA where you can pay the difference to swap for a better card within 90 days. We have not had much innovation in the past couple of years but we're expecting a massive bump coming in a couple of months. That won't be in time for Xmas but if your husband felt one card wasn't enough, he could pay the difference in a couple of months and get the new thing.

At 1080p, 2 cards seems like a big waste. I would get a nice single card solution and then if that isn't enough for him, let him Step-Up when they release the new stuff early next year.

Yes, that is excellent advice. To expand on that, I'd say that you should wait at least until black friday, and possibly even up until dec 10-15 if you go with EVGA b/c it's entirely possible that we'll see Nvidia's next gen in late februrary-early march timeframe. Step up can be a bit of a hassle, but he already has an evga motherboard so he definitely knows what it is.

If your husband is like most of us, I would recommend taht you grab a gtx 570 and when you give it to him mention something like "I bought in on Dec 13 b/c I wanted to be able to take advantage of the step-up program in case gtx 670 comes out before march 13". He will be so surprised/shocked/awed that you should get several months' worth of honey-do's with nary a frown! ;)
