Hello,
I am looking to buy a video card. I would like it to be below $140. I will be using it for some gaming in a game called Counter Strike: Source. It's is a pretty demanding game. Right now i have looked at the ATI x850pro and ATI x850XT. Anyone have any better advice on what to get?

Thanks,
Westi

I'm aware of cs:s thank you... :p
For that specific game I would suggest the 7600gt, becasue it utlizes sm3.0 and other new technology. The x850xt is an older card, though probably a little more powerful, and doesn't have the same technology. It will shine in games like battlefield @1280x1024 res.
The 7600gt can be found for $115 AR.
Welcome to the forums!:D

That slot type do you have? PCI, PCI-Express, or AGP? They are all very different.

Ahhh yes, the agp 7600gt is slightly, actually quite a bit, more expensive, $179. For agp, get the x850xt. It's like $150 or something.

EDIT: He prolly doesn't ahve pci b/c he's looking at the x850 series. But then again, you never know with these noo... first timers.:D

I'm leaning towards AGP version for some reason... Hope I'm right!

Surprised no one asked what processor he has, dont want to bottleneck him, that and the source line is very cpu dependant.

Soo.... what processor do you have :)

Thanks for the help so far. I am looking at a 3700+ Venice. Preferibly Pci-Express x16. With that Nvdida mentioned, where do you in fps?

Thanks,
Westi

That 7600gt silent pipe is excellent... if you need/want no noise. However you save ~$50 by going with a card with a fan.
For this, I suggest EvGA. They are generally great performers, and oc well if the need/desire arises. Plus, you can step up with their "step-up" program if you want a more powerful card in 3 months, it just has to be EvGA again.

EVGA FTW

I played CSS on an AXP 2500 and a Radeon 9600, got 60fps with a little of the settings toned down to medium

Course that was before my X1900.. Full settings on all and still 150+fps

Unless I haven't read closely enough, I haven't seen what kind of slot you have.. you can't just mash a PCI-e card into an AGP slot or vice versa..

It's all about the slots, yes? lol

I recently purchase a Evga 7600GT, and you should get one as well, I got mine from PCClub, if there is any at your area. They went for 139.99 and I could not resist not getting one, they are also selling 7900GS for 179.99 but were out of stock :( ...but anyways, you will not go wrong with EVGA!

EvGA is probably the most widely used brand, usually they oc the best as well. That bfg is factory oc'ed, so if you don't want ot oc at all, you may want that one. It's not that big an increase though, and EvGA has their step up program... so go with them.
