Video card advice..?

I know this is an oft-repeated topic, but this is because of individual requests and demands as well as the effects the coming and going of time has on video-card technology.
Anyhow, as it seems you (or at least I) can't get a Kyro2 to work with the Epox 8RDA mobo, I have to get a new card (was gonna anyway, but since the 9700 is very much sold out everywhere in Sweden, I was hoping I could keep my Kyro2 runnin' in the meantime) since I'm gonna snap any time now because of irreplacable 640*480@4bits colours and 60Hertz.

So this got me thinking that perhaps I don't need a very high end card, since my monitor will probably never go above 1024*768 anyway (at the highest; 1280*1024, but that is at 60Hertz).

Any thoughts, gribs, occurances?
Please note, I don't live in the states, so no links to newegg please 🙂

Heh, I'm not sure I understand the question 🙂

Are you seeking advice on what new card you might buy in Sweden? Wish I could help. I can tell you though that my old radeon seems to have gone bad (onboard memory is my guess, dunno for sure), and I just got a nice cheap Albatron and very happy with it. I think they're made in Taiwan, and most places I look they get pretty decent reviews on most of their cards.

If you could narrow down what you want in the way of opinions or help maybe I could be more useful. Alternatively, if you buy me round trip fare from the states, consider newegg selections NO PROBLEM! 😀

haha, ok 🙂

Hmm, I guess I can put it like this : Since Radeon9700-prices don't seem to be dropping anytime soon (they're sold out everywhere around here, and prices are actually on the rise), I was thinking that perhaps I'd be content with a radeon9500 pro.
Gaming is what I'd use it for, certainly, but my monitor can't handle more than 1024*768 at 85Hertz anyway (some games will be playable in 60hertz in 1280*1024 though), so higher resolutions than those isn't an issue.

I don't think you'd be happy gaming at 60Hz on any setting. The refreshrate is too low.

It be better to go with a lower setting and higher refresh rate.

It sounds like 9500 Pro is more than sufficient for you. But if you have a decent card, it may be better to get new monitor instead. Just my thoughts.

I assume you mean I would stress my eyes?
Doesn't XP set every game to 60hertz or something anyway? There are ways to make sure the refreshrate stays at a certain lvl anyway, but I don't know if I'd be bothered by 60 hertz much, if my eyes weren't. With v-synch off, of course.

Won't be getting a new monitor yet, waiting for TFT's to mature and become somewhat less pricey 🙂
As stated, I have a kyro2 now, or rather a geforce2 gts since nforce seems to hate kyros with a vengeance.

No thanks, I don't like nvidia, and I only have an nforce2 because it is grand for athlons, and nvidia hasn't smothered the mobo-market yet. Someone here told me that 'of course I wouldn't have to look at "nforce2"-something everytime during post', but that was of course wrong.

Sounds like you have your mind made up so go ahead and buy a 9500pro, the prices should fall a bit next month when the 9800pro comes out.

yeas, was thinking about that but alas, when will the dang new cards come out and lower the former versions prices?
If in not too long, I might wait.

I doubt you'll find many 9500's when the 9800 ships. It's very rare to find them in retail stores and they're starting to be harder to come by even in online outlets.
