Hey all, looking for a program that can take the video off of a Sony digital camcorder and put it on my hard drive so I can use Adobe Elements to edit it and such.

The software that came with Sony can only allow for 5 minutes to be taken off at any one given time. Need something that will let me take off more then that.

Any ideas?

The PC I'm on doesn't have an IEEE1394 port. Has USB which is what it says to use in the Sony manual. If it had the IEEE1394 I could just use Adobe Elements to capture the video.

Sorry, should have mentioned that.

Hmmm, couldn't find any programs recommended for transferring dv video over USB.
I'm kinda surprised, though, that sony would recommend USB for the DV transfer (i can understand, maybe, transferring data [pics/short clips] from the memory card)
The concensus would be to get a 1394 pci card for speed and quality (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/196714 )
Sorry couldn't help you with the program :(

The USB port on the sony camcorders is only for transfereing data from the memory stick. To tranfer from tape you have to use firewire (IEEE 1394).

After you get a IEEE 1394 card, I reccomend the following for DV transfer to your PC:

Scenalyzer ($39)
DVIO (Free)

I've also heard good things about WinDV, but I've not used it. The nice thing about Scenalyzer is that it will automatically detect Scene changes and start a new file for each scene.

EDIT: after re-reading the post, I guess I should say " My sony DV cam only allows transfer from tape via 1394". If the new camera's have USB2 they could potentially tranfer DV over USB, but I've not seen a program that will do that.
