Video Capture Limit in 98/ME...but not in 2k??

I was posting in another forum about the compatibility of the AIW-Radeon with Win2k, and was told that while not completely compatible, the video capture in 2k was only limited by your HD space. I was also told that in Windows ME and 98se, the largest capture you could make was 2 Gigs, Now correct me if I'm wrong, but at a high quality capture level (Mpeg2) that's barely and hour! I plan on having a very large HD, and would preferably like to have 98/ME for gaming, so is there any truth to the capture limit??

as far as I know, the limit is sometimes true. I have heard about people who have had issues capturing over 2GB in 98 through firewire from a camcorder, however, I have heard nothing to say whether or not the problem exists in Win2K. Another thing I remember hearing is that you WILL be able to capture and create files larger than 2GB but they work in wierd ways - like you may not be able to read/view past the 2gb point of the file.

I think you'll find the problem is with the FAT32 filesystem - it is pretty limited. The NTFS filesystem is actually pretty good (so who knows why MS doesn't use it more) and probably does not have any 2GB limitations.

I use Win2K for gaming. It works well for me - Q3a is faster under 2K than 98. If you set it up right and use good drivers you shouldn't have any problems. Of course, DOS is a whole nother ball game...

good luck!

I bet it's either because FAT32 has a 2gig file size limit, or because they are recycling old Win95 info (when Win95 only had FAT16 and 2gig per partition).

FAT32 has a single file size limitation of 4GB. NTFS4 is 2GB. Win2k with NTFS5 is unlimited. So, either copy 4GB/approx. 18 min. AVI at a time and join them when you render in Win98 or get yourself a copy of Win2k.
