Video capture - hardware & software help needed

What is a good way to be able to hook up a vcr to my computer so I can convert the tapes to dvd?

I would also like to be able to put more than one tape to a dvd, as some aren't that long. Then setting up the dvd to be able to pick the beginning of one of the tapes and also be able to jump right to a spot in one of the "episodes".
