Video Capture From DVD

I want to convert all my old tapes to DVD and then at some time edit the video off the DVD's to make a final presentable DVD. I have Studio by Pinnacle, but I am not sure I can capture video off a DVD placed into the DVD drive to edit. Do I need any special hardware or do I just play the video off a DVD player into the computer? Is there any software that can edit the video files from a dvd like you would edit video from a video camera using a video editting program?

It depends on how you're moving from tape to DVD. If you're doing it yourself, you'll want to just capture to a file format that you can edit. It ought to be rather straight forward. If you're some how getting a third party to do the transfer for you, you'll need to have a DVD drive in your computer. An external one might be an option too. Their authoring method will affect your choices.

Best way to do it is to have a video capture device that is capable of recording in mpeg2. As this is the native format of DVD's anyways. Most home DVD/movie making packages will also allow you to edit mpegs and usually the video capture device you have will also usually have DVD making and home movie making software.

I had tried the program that comes with Nero 7 Ultra (I forget its name) with my Dad's eVGA 5900 Ultra w/ WDM drivers installed, and Nero didn't like it...and suggestions on other cheap or free programs that people know work with a 5900's vivo?
