Someone recently asked if it would be better to get a GF4 and a vid capture card or an AIW 8500 and the consensus was an astounding GF4/vid card combo.

My question is what's the best vidcard then that will give the same ease fo use as the AIW, I'm going to be watching TV on my CPU but it will be via a sat. connection so I don't need to actual change the channels via the cpu since there is a seperate rec. Plus, I guess I don't need a coax input since all my connections are via S-video.

Also it needs to be able to capture in Mpeg1 format so that I can make VCD's to send to my relatives.

Well that's what I need the AIW seemed to fit my specs but I just recently picked up the GF3 ti200 from gateway for $85 so I really would rather buy just the capture card instead of having to plop down the $250 thw AIw 8500 128mb is going to run me.

Any input would be great.

Thanks,

Mark

The separate tuner cards with those Conexant/Brooktree 8x8 chips on are no match for the ATi Rage Theater chip on the AIWs. The latter has very good de-interlacing and filters, for an excellent TV picture on the computer monitor.

Well thanks peter now your confusing me, in the other thread people were clearly saying that the GF4/capture card are going to give better performance than the AIW is this not true?

I have the ATi TV-Wonder VE PCI (VE=Value Edition).
I am not mistaken the big-brother of this card, The ATi TV-Wonder has the inputs you need including a TV.

Someone correct me!?

there are two camps, the nvidiots will tell you to go with GF no matter what your requirements are. and the ATI camp will tell you that the Radeon is the only card for multimedia solutions.

But since you are on satelite you won't need the AIW you just need a VIVO card, either a Radeon or GF. it comes down to which card has the best capture chip between the GF and Radeon and everyone knows that the ATI cards have the better capture chip. But then again I'm in the ati camp.

I agree with Nic Colt. have you considered the All In Wonder 7500? It might do what you want. Well since you have already bought a card trw www.hauppage.com, though I had one of their cheap cards I went with the aiw 7500 and for the most part am satisfied.
Their driver and other support for XP was dreadfull.

Well I did just get the GF3 but I have 3 systems I'm currently building for my home. One will have the GF3, one will have a GF DDR and one was going to have a cheap vid card but I could always bump the cards down the line and put a new AIW 8500 (DV or 128mb) in the machine I want to do the video capturing in. Mainly I wanted to know which card is going to be best for vid capturing and it seems the ATI's chipset has the best quality, so that's they way I'll go.

FrustratedUser, ATi's separate TV Wonder cards also use the Conexant 8x8 chips, not ATi's own Rage Theater chip.

Is that good or bad? I should have got the ATi TV-Wonder with S-Video input. Think that should be just fine for capturing analog S-Video signals. As of now I can only capture composite with poorer quality.
