Video burning nightmare

I need some help on how to burn videos to DVD. My problem is that my converter cuts off the first few seconds of my show and also it lowers the quality terribly, everything is zoomed in (widscreen and regular) so that it cuts things off around the edges. this is turning into a real head ache for me any and all help i could get would be great. Currently using Nero 6, and ImToo converter. All my shows are .avi and look just like they would on my tv.
