They have some balls, but I wouldn't say that they were taking extreme risks. The difference there is, most people there know how to drive/ride/walk in that kind of traffic. Even walking in NYC is unlike anywhere else.

That video was sped way up. No way that was at normal speed. They made way too many turns that are impossible at the speed in the video.

Nope, thats them. I hate them. I swear I've nearly been run down by them at least 50 times. I'm more worred about being taken down by one of them than from a yellow cabby, who are quite possibly the lowest form of life on the road.

You need really, really thick skin to drive in NY. You practically need body armor to be a pedestrian. It's like I have this spider sense about it now from dodging them. You just have to learn to ignore them. The only way they are going to hit you is if you act unpredictably...pretend theyre not there, and theyll just fly around you.

Cabbies on the other hand, will threaten to run you down. It's funny to watch tourists run when theyre crossing the street. If the light turns solid red while theyre crossing, the cab in front of them will lunge at them as if they werent there, and usually they get spooked and try to dash. The problem is, the cab in the lanes around already took off, and they're stuck between a cab that wants to kill them, and two lanes of traffic flying by. You get used to it, and just ignore their little lunges. If you walk like you're a NYer, as oblivious to them as they are to you, the traffic WILL stop. Most of the time. 😛

Frankly, I like that sort of system. I mind my business, you mind your business. If you run into me, there will be hell to pay, but if you are skilled, I'm not going to sit there and bitch about how "you were THIS CLOSE to hitting me!" Especially not if I'm in a car...don't expect me to brake if you cut me off, but on the other hand, know that I'm not going to be a total douche and try to swerve into you or anything stupid like that. Everyone lives peacefully, and only the people who screw up get punished.

If you don't have the skills...don't do it. If you screw up...expect to pay the full price. But if you have the skills, and don't screw up, you shouldn't have to deal with people going out of their way to inconvenience you. It just strikes me as shockingly petty and immature. Of course, judging by the tailgating threads in this forum, petty and immature is what we humans do best...
