Video Artifacts in CS but not 3D mark???

Hi everyone,

I recently overclocked my GF2 MX to 205/195. I tested it with the 3D Mark demo, didn't see any video artifacts, and thought everything was OK.

I played Counter-Strike and video artifacts started appearing. I thought maybe I was pushing my card too much. I went back to default setting for my video card and still saw artifacts.

Could I have possibly damaged my card by pushing it too far? Has anyone, besides me, ever noticed artifacts in Counter-Strike and not 3D Mark? What's an average overclock of the MX? I have an ASUS V7100 Pure.

All input is appreciated :) .

Thanks Gtd 2000.

Is it OK to assume that the video card is stable if it can run 3D mark benchmark or demo with out crashing, running the program only once, no looping)? I'm going to try Quake3 demo tonight to check for stability and artifacts.

I would like to try to get my memory to 200 and core to 210 but I don't want to fry my card. (I just have the heatsink that came with the Asus). Any advice?

BTW, Gtd 200, I remember talking to you about overclocking the MSI Turbo. I got it to 933 no problem, and it's currently running at 960 (7*137).

Regarding the MX2 I'd say change from 205/195 to maybe 190-195/195-200 the closer my card gets to "210"/xxx setting the more I can see slight light spots appearing in 3DMark2000.
I think for the "safety" of the card you should try to get a fan for your heatsink - I only use the overclocked settings when I need them (project IGI) otherwise standard settings is perfectly smooth on CS for me :)
My MX2 comes with a heatsink/fan so perhaps thats one reason I don't get the artifacts?

I ran my system last night and got a result of 5605 3DMarks :)

I'm now running at 933Mhz too after running at 950Mhz for the last week.
The actual problem was one of my sticks of RAM :(
For some reason I seem to have this sorted out now - and although my PC133 RAM is only CAS3 I've got it running at Turbo and CAS2 settings to give a Sisoft Sandra membench of 556/583 which is pretty respectable :)

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into a fan. I'll try those video card setting after work. I've tried CS at default video card settings too. It runs fine. I tried 205/195 with Q3 Arena lasy night and I didn't see any artifacts. Maybe it only occurs in CS? Actually, I only see white specks on the black patches left by explosions. Maybe it's a driver problem (6.50)???

I took my system up to 966Mhz. My 3DMark2K score was around 5420. Any suggestions on how I can take it up higher?

I also have PC133 CAS3 (Micron chips, generic board), I have it to SPD in the MSI bios. I get 491/574 with Sandra, not that great but it is OK at 138Mhz FSB (hopefully 140).

The light/white specks sound like the artifacts I get too - I see them only slightly in the helicopter part of 3DMark2000.

I did membenchmark testing last night with the different memory settings on my 'board. I'd use a higher memory FSB but I prefer to use standard settings as much as possible as I'm already overclocking the video card and CPU and RAM at CAS2 :)
Have you tried benchmarking at Host CLK + PCI CLK with cas 2 etc etc?

I found that the memory settings have made the biggest difference to my 3Dmark test results - unless that was a coincidence?

My results were generally around 5290 before I think?

I can only use 4-way inter. if it's set to SPD in the MSI bios. Definitely better performance this way. I take it you have the KT7a? What CPU are you using?

BTW, what's Project|G|??? I guess there is really no need to OC the video card if CS is smooth.

Mavo,

do you see the artifacts in CS when using 16bit or 32bit mode? My Geforce also showed artifacts when using 16bit in 3D Games, but I never saw artifacts in 3D Mark...

I see it in 16 bit mode and only in CS. Have you managed to fix your problem, Hanky?

Yes have the KT7A - great board so far :)
I'm running a Duron 700 - which will post at 1050 but not into Windows.
It'll run at 1000Mhz though - but I just throttle back to 933/950 for CPU temps :)

I don't know how to enable 32bit in CS (even though I also played it a while back I didn't remember you couldn't choose the colour depth...). Anyway I got artifacts in 16bit mode in almost every 3D game but had no artifacts in 32bit mode when using the same games. Interestingly I never had artifacts in 3D Mark 2000 (16bit and 32bit).
