video adapter?

Hello. My computer got shut off while it was running norton speed disk (defragment). Next time I turned it on it was reverted to default video stuff-16 colors and gray backgrounds- and I got a message that my display adapter was not working or set wrong. I tried reloading the video driver (a tweaked S3 driver for diamond stealth savage4 card), and another newer one, but they both act funky and can't show high color. The standard diamond driver seems to work, but it doesn't work as well as the driver I was using.

I ran system file checker, it said "iun505.exe" and "msisys.exe" were altered. I tried to restore but file checker couldn't find them- this brio stores everything on cabs on the hard disk instead of on a win98 cd. It looks like either I wipe everything and reinstall, or suck it up and use the slower driver for a while. Any other ideas on what's going on or what I can do? Thanks.

PS- its an HP brio. It's been nothing but trouble: don't buy HP, at least not low end HP. Nothing but trouble.:(
