i just swaped my prophet sdr for a v5 and now gameplay is still smooth with vid-sync on (i hate tearing). i know most die hard gamers shun vid-sync, and swear by nvidia, did i find the connection here or are the newer nvidia card good with vid-sync on too?

If you were having smooth gameplay troubles ONLY when vsync was on with your SDR, most likely you had your refresh rate set to low. The v5 is faster than a SDR, so that might be why it seamed like it was smoother with vsync on.

nope, the choppyness is only when an ocasional thing, in counter-strike for instance, it was chopy when the map loaded for a bit, the first time i picked up a new weapon it would stuter and the first time i used a sniper zoom the same thing. this was only when i had vid-sync on, but the refresh was at 60hz an i belive i eventualy found a way turn it up to 75 befor i uninstaled it, but it was still chopy. btw i went through all the bios settings and confirmed both optimal and compatablity settings with 3rd party programs like sandra and wcpuid. my systems is fairly current and basic, socket t-bird on an epox board, 128mb 133pc-133, soundblaster live, cheap nic good powersuply and so on. the only preformance inhibiter i have is that im running at udma33, but the hardrive is not active during the choppyness so i doubt thats it. everything runs incradably stable and cool, 28/38 is the most i have seen for case/cpu temps respectivly. the card runs smooth as silk with vid-sync off, but tears like tolet-paper. so i ask all you nvidia owners, do you use vid-sync on your card?

is tearing like stairstepping? not jaggies, framerate loss or paging to the drive? if so Im getting that on my radeon 64mb retail and geforce ddr on a 19" monitor at 1024x768 32 bit color at 85hz and its frankly pissing me off and I don't know what to do about it. I have tried vsync on and off and Im seeing no difference damnit?

unreal is on the quake engine, right? quake, you gotta put r_displayrefresh <your monitor refresh rate here> on the command line, or your refresh rate is minimal. (never tried seta)
