Here are the two I am looking at:

Midrange system - 500-600Mhz, 128+MB RAM

Either - GeForce2MX (Hercules)

or

Voodoo 5 5500

I realize the price differnce is substantial, but where I live a Geforce 2 GTS is almost $100 more than the V5, and that would be pushing it, although I could possible justify the V5, if it is much better than the GF2MX.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Depends on what kinda games you play. If you're an Unreal fan, or you play mostly Glide optimized games, I would pick the Voodoo5. But for just about everything else, GF2 MX will be better.

Outside of the price difference, how could you possibly recommend a MX over a V5?

Even in Q3 benchmarks, the V5 is faster except at the lowest resolution.

I would go with the MX. I am not a 3dfx basher, I am a 3dfx OWNER. My V3 2000 has been a great and reliable card; however, right now the MX rules the roost in price/performance. If I were to get a new card today (which I will not) it would be the MX.

MX is the Duron of GPUs. For midrange Gaming, I'd definitely go MX.

I beleive there is also a Radeon SDR available now. Check pricewatch - I'm sure a vendor had an SDR version for 135 $US

I would go with the voodoo 5500, it is a much better card.
I have one and I love it. It is the most stable card I've
ever had.

if you are going to spend that much money and go for the v5 5500 than y not just get the geforce 2 gts...i run q3a at 1280 x 1024 ar 80+ frames on an athlon 750@850...so you should get pretty good fps on the 500-600....

GO with the GTS!!!
