I have a BFG GeForce 6800GT OC.

It is idling at 67/68C. Is that too hot? When should I be worried?

Well, mine is currently idling at 57 core / 42 ambient & it's ballsy hot in my apartment. This is on 77.30 drivers w/ no overclock.

I just ran 3dMark05 and looked at my temps and I was peaking at 96C Core and 61C ambient.

I currently have a lot of room around my card and it doesn't seem like it should be that hot. What are my options?

wow, not good. mine idles at 53 and loads 70. touch the back of the card on the plastic plate and if it is too hot to touch, then it is bad.

96!!! Holy fvck that's hot! You could almost boil water on that thing. Time to invest in some AS5 and replace the stock HSF with something better. And get some airflow in that case. 61C ambient is way way to hot inside that computer. At least take the side pannel off and keep it off.

Why do you think it's running so hot??
I've got an XBlade case, it has OK cooling: http://www.a-top.com/xblade/xblade.html Look at the specs.

I have a fan in front, a fan on the side, and I have a decent Thermaltake heat sink.

Do you think another fan on the opposite side would help? or maybe upgrading to 120cm fants would do much?

What are your drivers? Make sure you update to > 71.89's as the earlier ones had a temperature bug in them that boosted idle/load temps up by about 10 degrees.

77.72 :(
I'm thinking about putting a 120cm fan up front and moving the one up front to the opposite side.

Do you guys think that is the reason its so hot? or no

Well the consensus is that it shouldn't matter because Nvidia set the throttle down threshold at 120C.
If I were you though I'd fix the cooling, 61 ambient is too hot and wouldnt be good for other components.

His card is also using a little more power than yours. I'm idling at 48 mem / 51 core currently.

mine is idling about 70C but that's because the only cooling going on around that area is from the fan on card itself. I may have to install another fan around the middle front of my p180 to help cool it down a little.

Dude, dust inside your case.

I've got a Leadtek 6800GT AGP and started to have some stability issues with it (though it wasn't actually heat related, the game just doesn't like NV drivers) and noticed my load temps were hitting into the 90s, so I opened up my case and guess what? All my fans were cloged up with dust. My idle temp dropped from 73ish to 60 after just cleaning all the poo off of stuff.

Give it a whirl. If that doesn't help enough, try putting some AS5 inbetween your stock cooling solution and your card. That's what I did for my Leadtek and it has helped A LOT in keeping it cooler. If that fails, go out and get an NVSilencer. Though removing the heatsink will void your warrenty, so do so at your own risk.
