vid card fan not turning...

I assume that the fan on my visiontek xtasy Gforce 3 card should just start turning when i turn on the computer... i dont really know. Does it only kick on when the card is too hot???????

thanks....

The fan most definitely should be turning at all times!

Sounds like a locked rotor. The fan needs replacing or the card will lock the system especially when playing games.

Cheers!

Yep, I would replace the fan asap so that it doesn't kill the card. Any 40mm hsf should work, but I would make sure by checking on how it connects to the card (maybe with pins), and try to get another hsf which resembles this, then put some heat paste on and install the new hsf.

Thank you both....

Thats the prob. Locked fan. My games run better now that its of the card :^]

I have my case open and a floor fan blowing into the case, will this solve the cooling prob until I get another fan???? I usually have my case this way for cheap, easy cooling.

I think that you will have a nice cool system with a big floor fan blowing on it 🙂

Personally though, i would worry about dust etc being blown into my case. But if this is just a stop-gap measure and not a long term solution, you should be fine.

Or go fanless, replace the stock fan/sink with a bigger sink. See my comments here. Unfortunately an older thread on the topic linked in that thread seems to have expired from the forums, too bad.

My GF2 is still plum happy without a fan.
