I have a 3650 HD AIW installed in my lil bros comp a couple years ago. But the past 3 weeks, I noticed yellow pixelated artifacts popping in certain shades of grey and pink.

I loaded CPU-Z to check the temps and it's showing around 51-60 idle and 84 C on load with furmark !!!! (no artifacts on furmark tho). But then, as i loaded a demo for whiteout from AMD's website. String like artifacts are going out of control. From all the reviews i read, idle temps should be at least 35 C ~ :(

There were no dusts around, I made sure of that. I added a 120 MM fan on the side of the case (HP case do mind ya :p ) to aid some cooling. Still, there was a no go. It's almost 2 years since the purchase, warranty...doesn't seem likely.

What are my options?

- should i try to attempt to re apply thermal paste? (save $$$)
- get a similar card or better? (very little gaming btw, just aiming, facebooking, wonderking >_> )
- use 4650 HD on hand and get a better for my other comp >:D !!!!

I got their comp from a walmart 2 years ago black friday.

1 pci-e 16x
sempron x2 core
450 W PSU
2 gigs for DDR 2 ram.

update:

Well it comes to the point that the 3650 is not getting any better...I'll replace it with 4650 HD xfx from my work comp. The question is, will a gts 250 will have a better performance boosts in terms in gaming @ 1440x900 over the 4650 ?

update: 6/2

I added the 4650, no artifacts showing up on the whiteout demo (from ati's website) thank god lol. BUT yellow pixelation/lines/waves still pops up on shades of white/highlights now. The 4650 HD that i get from my other machine is still running great, I dunno why yellow pixels still popping out with different card.

*Since it only draws power from the mobo...is it the motherboard that is failing? (so far nothing has crashed since 2 years).

*Was it the power supply not powering enough juice to the card? It's a 400 W psu that I grabbed from newegg 2 yrs ago.

*Should I do a clean reformat and see if the yellow pixelations go away ?

update: 6/3

* I swapped with a different power supply, still yellow pixelations still pop up.

* I grabbed a different monitor, and plugged to it's vga port. NO pixelations. And I wonder what the hell is going on. Probably I guess the VGA port in the Westing house HDTV32" is causing the problem.

* I grabbed a DVI to HDMI cord for the HDTV LCD, then of course made it go hdmi and there were no pixelations. Problem solved? so far it's not showing up.

So the question is that, could VGA ports can go bad on a monitor/hdtv over time? It's almost 3 years + old now. And I wonder after all the time using it heat/cold can cause some wear n tear on the circuitry? Anyways, I'm running the 4650 HD on HDMI and so far it's going well.

TLDR:

* thinking 3650 HD is dying slowly
* Pixel artifacts pops out on red/pink/gray shades and
* 3d application shows artifacts
* Made sure drivers are up to date, temps were fine and no dust bunnies.
* Changed vid card to 4650, slight improvemen, no artifacts on 3d applications. But yellow pixelations still occurs.
* Changed PSU, no change with the pixelation problem
* Changed Monitor from HDTV32" to LCD 19"W hp, pixelation is gone (using dvi to vga cord for both monitors)
* Thought it could be the vga port problem in the HDTV32"
* Used a DVI to HDMI cord from card to HDTV. yellow pixels is gone

*could it be that the VGA port in the HDTV gone bad?

I don't believe it's possible for a piece of hardware like the video card to just "start dying"

I think it's either dead or its not.

Now certain things CAN go bad, like ball bearings in fans, those can wear down over time, but the integral parts of the circuitry will more or less stay constant absent a electrical surge or mechanical damage....and when that happens it usually should be catastrophic failure meaning NOTHING works.

I would say if the temp is fine, and the fans are running fine, you probably have a software issue

When I added a new 120 mm fan over time, the yellow pixels will go away, but as soon I Play a heavy 3d app. Artifacts will pop out again as usual.

I updated the cat to 10.5 and made sure nothing is keeping the fan from being stuck. Case is free from dust with better airflow. Now the question is that what else would've caused yellow artifacts on shades of grey?

artifacting can be a heat related issue.

Are you able to play like this non-stop, or do you crash at some point? Maybe try underclocking the card to see?

sempron x2? I never even heard of that till now.

After Intel launched the Celeron Dual core, AMD reduced the L2 cache on the Athlon X2 Brisbane core down to 256k/core and called it Sempron X2. I think this was back in 07, but due to price wars and the rapidly falling prices on Athlon X2 processors below $100, they only saw US retail for a few months before newegg and other places got rid of them. They remained some what popular in budget OEM machines and over seas for a short time before AMD just phased them out.

To the OP, I don't think the video card would just start dieing without a cause. I would disable overdrive if you have it enabled in CCC, and if everything is at stock speeds give a slight downclock a try. I would think, anything that isn't heat related, would artifact during basic use and not just in a game.

I appreciate the feedback so far, atm right now. the artifacts (subtle but noticable) still occur while even at idle even when the card downclocks it's gpu and memory (according to rivatuner). The OC ability is not enabled in CCC and there's no tab button for overdrive. This is AIW HD, a 3650 HD with a 650 ATI tuner in one.

I replaced the 3650 HD with my 4650 HD xfx. A slight improvement, but now only yellow pixelation like artifacts (either wavy or at a straight line) pops up on highlights.

I have a few ideas what is going on, but I'm not sure the power supply is the culprit. Other than the video card sucking up the juice, I have only 1 dvdrw/1 hdd + mobo w/ cpu (sempron x 2) running on the machine. It's a SAGA brand 400W psu that i grabbed from newegg couple years back.

If it's not the power supply, could a reformat will do the work?

or

Monitor crapping out? (I used a LCD monitor test, nothing shows up on it either, good pixels). it's a westinghouse HDTV32 3 years ago.

running out of ideas :(

ok, I added some updates in the main post. Problem solved...really happy about it. But, I wonder is that the VGA port in the LCDTV caused all of these problems?

Anyways, great feedback so far..it's a biotch to make this work. Thank goodness for spare parts :) !!!!!!!!!!

I can use more input from ya guys.

also added TLDR version.
