recently i have formatted my laptop and installed windows XP Profeesional. but when i install the windows update it is saying Your windows product key is not genuine, you may victim of software counterfeiting. when i used the original product key which came up with my laptop it is not accepting, so i have used my friends product key to install OS.
How to avoid this problem. Is thr any chance to do it without formatting.

You can buy a key from Microsoft online, a link will be supplied with the Genuine Advantage popup. This will not require a format. However this isn't available in all parts of the world (not in New Zealand, for example) so I'm not sure what other options are available.

does your laptop have the XP product key sticker on it? If you believe your XP is legit, call Microsoft, they will give you the run around (IE: contact the notebook maker) but might help. MS will try to sell you a new key. If your XP isn't legit, then you can buy a copy or put up with the message, which doesn't do anything except annoy you. (can still get critical updates) Unless MS decides to change that and make non legit boxes lock up 🙂

When you formatted what media did you use? The XP CD that came with the laptop?

Who sold you the laptop/OS ?
