Vice City controls?

What kind of control config are you all using for this game? I don't have a gamepad, didn't see an option anyway ?, but either way, the quick WSAD/FPS-style config I tried doesn't work too well. I wasn't using mouse steering either, cause that seems like it would be even harder. But have yall found any good ways to control with kb + mouse?

I keep my keyboard in my lap and a cordless Logitech Wingman. While driving I use my controller and as soon as I hit my button to get out of the car I put the controller down and switch to keyboard and mouse. The helicopter is hard to control without a controller with a thumb stick on it.

This is the best setup you can have. Driving with a thumbstick owns. Or if you have a wheel that would be nice but harder to switch that way.

no you can set a keyboard button to lean backward and forward on the bike. BUT you won't be able to ride a wheelie for long without a control pad with a thumb stick. I can ride one for a long time with a wingman.

thought so ..

ugh .. this RC Helicopter mission, where you load bombs is reallly hard on a KB.
there's another, but i dont' wanna ruin the different missions.

completed that one the first try with controller. Also there is a RC airplane type deal later on in the game to which also is hard without a controller.

I use a Macally Ishock (it's a clone of a PS1/2 analog controller), its made for a mac, but for some reason windows XP recognizes it (as the Macally ishock). I've been using that on GTA VC for PC. The easiest way to configure your controls for a gamepad is to start in classic controls mode. then edit as you go. Both the analog and D pad work fine in GTA VC and I have everything set now to run just like a PS2 controller. It's like playing PS2 again but just 10x better graphics and now my own MP3 music!

btw I can pop a wheelie on my ishock too just like you do on a PS2... just push back on the D pad. Set it in the configure controls. I tried the keyboard just to see what the key+mouse thing is like. It sucks! I wouldn't play it without my PS2 cloned gamepad. I have no idea where to get an official PC model though. Macally is a mac focused peripherals manufacturer. They dont even have windows drivers availabel so I don't know why win XP has built in drivers and recognizes it. It doesn't just say generic gamepad eiter, it specifically states MacAlly Ishock and gives me the analog calibration controls and 17 button assignments. I don't know why that is but I'm not complaining 🙂 In fact I am ordering a MacAlly Ishock2 tonight and see if that works as well. The Ishock2 is force feedback analog. Reasonably priced around $25-30 street price.

You use a joystick? I got a pretty nice Saitek one here, haven't used it though since it's not mine. Could try that, but I should just throw down on a cheap gamepad so I can play it like the PS2.

I also have a wheel, but I didn't think it was supported. It would seem like a hassle anyway to keep switching unless one was fond of just cruising around.

im perfectly fine on WASD, with the exception of the infernal RC helecopter and RC plane missions, which are shockingly bad to try and play with keyboard and mouse, really let down the rest of the game (which is superb imo). you can buy some USB converters to use any playstation pad with PC, Joytech one probably a safer bet than some of the generic's,(example).

i use a thrustmaster dual analog controller....its a PS2 clone; i actually have one of the psx controller converters but my PS controllers dont have analog thumbstiicks. WASD is definetly better when u need the accuracy, but just a hassle at any other time. tho i did get used to it when i had to RMA my controller last yr when GTA3 was out.

btw does any1 know the default buttons for the PS2 version? i wanna make the controls the same on my gamepad

I tried just the standard keyboard controls when I installed Vice City last night and they were so so... This morning I plugged in an Interact AxisPad I had kicking around (wouldn't reccomend it in general but it's a great PS2 controller equivalent that works fine with Vice City with no additional drivers or software) - man what a difference with the driving!

I was going through the mental process of matching up the controller mapping this morning, so here's what I remembered:

X - run/sprint in walk mode, forward/accelerate in driving mode
Square - Jump in walk mode, reverse/decelerate in driving mode
Triangle - Get in/out of vehicles (both modes)
Circle - fire

R2/L2 - Aim/Target lock in walk mode (might just be L2 that's aim) - look left/right in car
R1/L1 - toggle weapons on foot / toggle radio stations in car
R3 (clicking right analog controller) - either mission toggling stuff or horn/siren stuff - I forget

That's the bulk of them, enough to get by without reverting to keyboard most of the time. 😛

dont forget the select button is change views. I hate the up close view of GTA VC's default.

The one thing I can't get to happen, which probably will never happen is make my ESC button the start button equivalent on the gamepad. I hate having to press ESC everytime I need to view the map or mission, espcially when I am driving.
