Vibrating sound when cold booting on P4

Hi all! Have a little problem I hop you can help with... I have a stock P4 heatsink and fan (P4 2.4C OC'd to 3Ghz) and my MB is a Giga-Byte 8IPE1000Pro that has ran very well for the long while that I've had it. The problem I'm having recently is that when I cold boot I get this vibrating rattling sound for about 30 seconds during boot up. It sounds like that CPU fan is having a problem but then seems to go away after the fan reaches normal RPM's. Anyone else have anything like this happen? I'll do some checking for reviews of coolers but I if anyone has a sugestion they'd like to make I'm all ears! Thanks all!

I, too, had a 2.4C Oc'd to 3 Ghz, but never even thought to TRY the stock cooler. I planned using an aftermarket heatpipe cooler from the get-go.

Sounds like bearing rattle to me, but hard to imagine it occurring on such a small fan as the Intel stock cooler.

It's up to you and whether you wanna spend a little money. Or you could try rigging a different fan on the stock heatsink. I embrace jerry-rigged home-DIY solutions like that, but in the case of your stock HSF, I'd just get a TR XP90 or XP 120 and be done with it. With an XP 120 and a Panaflo 120x38mm fan, you'd be looking at $50 + $17 + shipping, handling and any tax.

At least with the XP120 and a Panaflo M1 or H1 -- even the ultra-high-speed (running at only about 2,800 rpm after all) -- the enhancement would be more quiet than your stock HSF, and probably several degrees centigrade cooler. You could probably control the fan from your mobo CPU_Fan header and use SpeedFan to depress the speed to say -- around 2,000 or 2,100 at idle so that it spins up to full speed when the 2.4C climbs above -- what? -- 95F? The 2.4C is a very cool-running CPU.

What you have is the classic symptoms of a dirty/worn fan.

What you need to do is clean off all the dust bunnies on your fans, then lube the fan spindle with plastic-friendly light machine oil. The noise should go away afterwards.

And you have to do this regularly, once a while. More often if your fan spins at high RPMs.

HTH.

I've never replaced a P4 heatsink\fan before, so is it the same to apply the thermal paste? How much would you recommend?

I've decided on the XP-90 with the Vantec 92mm Silent fan. I'm also going to replace my case fans while I'm in there. I have 4 Vantec Tornado case fans always running (making my room sound like I'm at an airport half the time) so hopefully it'll quiet things down. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I went ahead and purchased the XP90 and a 92mm Vantec Stealth fan for the PSU. I also bought some 80mm Stealth fans to replace the stock 80mm case fans in the case. How much quieter do you think it will be with the Stealths? Thanks all!
