VIA's P4X333 @ Anand's

"Unfortunately the reference board VIA sent out for testing would not even post with an AGP 8X card installed."

really? a board from via with features that don't work right? tell me it isn't so! (yes, that was sarcasm)

"According to VIA, the USB 2.0 core was disabled in all reference boards that were sent out to the press. Citing driver issues for not enabling the functionality, VIA assured us that USB 2.0 is fully functional in all chipsets coming off the production line and the situation will be remedied immediately."

i wonder how many 4:1 driver updates they'll need before that is finaly fixed.

i still don't understand who would want to deal with via products.

It's all about price performance and via has been nothing been rock stable on the AMD line for me so if I were to go P4 I would take a serious look at there DDR333 solution.

Hmmmm. Quite Impressive I must say (and I am a strong believer in 850e+PC1066). Although, I wish Anand would have done a more in depth comparision of the Pentium 4 chipset scene. It is very much long overdue.

Amen Diable

Im replacing my VIA board with an SiS one, the bloody thing has been giving me so much problems its unbelievable, not even bios/driver updates fixed my problems

You could just as easily say that it is a problem with the SiS card, seeing as how they are the only 2 AGP 8X products out there.

Speaking of which, what chipsets did SiS test their card in?

Just read it again. Glossed over that part.

We got confirmation from SiS that the Xabre 400 works fine in forthcoming AMD and Intel AGP 8X chipsets.

What upcoming AMD chipset? I thought that they were getting out of the chipset biz?

CBone

Yes, seems like the tables have turned. It's by far not the best time for VIA. While they're still #1 on the Athlon arena, their P4 chipsets sales are only dropping. Does anyone know why they didn't buy the license? SiS did. Why couldn't VIA?

Hes prolly reffering to the upcomign AMD 8000 series of chipsets for Athlon ClawHammer and Opteron processors.
No its not. Its all about stability, compatibility and performance.
True, but VIA has reached a point where they are very stable and compatible in reference to the competition. So the primary factors become price/performance.
Anyone know what type of chipset "Springdale" will be?? dual DDR?
Intel's Springdale series are supposed to have Prescott support, but to be launched in early 2003 (does this indicate a much sooner launch of Prescott then the previously assumed Q4'03 date is the question). The DDR Springdale will be indeed a depretive of the E7500's Dual Channel DDR Memory controller, except with at least DDR266 support and likely DDR333 support and also supporting a 166MHz QDR fsb (likely to be used by a Prescott). That is about all we know at this point. The main issue with Springdale (just like the issue is with P4X600 as well) is the question of cost. I really feel that most certainly Intel's Springdale will be a very expensive solution (more expensive that 850e boards due to 2 64-bit channels whereas 850e needs 2 only 16-bit buses.). We'll see
Does anyone know why they didn't buy the license?
Mainly 2 reasons. One Intel was charging a huge fee that they supposedly aren't charging SiS, and secondly, and more importantly, is VIA feels that they do legally have a P4 Bus licence due to their part ownership of S3 Graphics. Now whether they really do is debatable.

Come and see my two VIA boards, I`ll show you how to build VIA boards it`s very easy or SiS ,I`ve had them all with no problems 😉. Right now VIA are riding high with their latest chipsets for stability,I still think the P4X333 has more potential & will be fine tuned by VIA so we are not seeing it`s full potential at the moment.

As for the Intel/VIA license problem,I don`t know what`s going to happen here but I`m sure it`s hurting sales for the VIA based P4 boards.
