Could a New 'Viagra Condom' Encourage Safer Sex?
By Meredith Melnick Monday, May 9, 2011 | View Comments

The problem with condoms is that they don't get used as often as they should. But an innovative new product by a British biotech firm may change men's minds: called CSD500, the condom helps men keep their erection longer.

It's been dubbed the "Viagra condom," but that's not entirely accurate. The new product is lined with a vasodilating gel, which increases blood flow to the penis and helps maintain erection. But unlike the pill, it's not designed for men who have erectile dysfunction; rather, it's meant for men who have trouble keeping erections specifically while using a condom.

(More on TIME.com: "5 Little-Known Truths About American Sex Lives")

CSD500 was developed by Futura Medical and licensed to the Durex brand, which is owned by consumer-products company Reckitt Benckiser. The product is close to regulatory approval in the U.K. and may be on the market within the year, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. If the manufacturer seeks FDA approval to market the condom in the U.S., it will have to provide more clinical trial data.

The CSD500 is certainly an innovative idea, not least because it targets male users. Most advances in birth control — like hormone patches or pills — are geared toward women. And many men would probably agree that the stalwart but lowly condom has been long overdue for an upgrade.

So how does Futura's new invention work? The trick was getting the gel to stay put inside the condom, so that it would not affect the condom-wearer's partner. According to the Journal:

Finding an active ingredient was straightforward — it's a generic compound for the treatment of angina, a severe chest pain caused by lack of blood flow to the heart. However, "immobilizing" the gel in the condom, so the vasodilator only touches the wearer during sexual intercourse, was the clever part.

"The challenge is having a stable product in a condom — a gel that doesn't do anything detrimental to the condom," Futura Chief Executive James Barder said.

"Some products can degrade the latex very quickly," said Mr. Barder, noting that adding the vasodilator to the lubricant is complicated. "It has to be immobilized in the condom." Most of the patents protecting CSD500 are associated with this immobilization, Mr. Barder said.

Although CSD500 isn't meant to compete with Viagra, despite its nickname, a check of online sales of the drug would suggest there's no shortage of men who use it recreationally, which bodes well for future sales of an erection-encouraging condom.

But regulators are more interested in what the condom promises to do for rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI). A product that improves firmness and duration will surely encourage condom use, but the CSD500 also combats another common cause of STI transmission: condoms that slip off because of erectile problems.

Reckitt Benckiser plans to investigate the condom's commercial viability in Europe if it is approved, and then expand to the U.S. market.

I'm guessing drug mules might want to avoid this variety of dick tourniquet.

What happens if the guy slaps it on upside down by mistake?

unless you never used one, it is apparent when you attempt to put it on backwards...

I'm sure an observant, intelligent individual such as yourself would never make that mistake. However it turns out that this problem is actually quite widespread. You have to take into consideration that all condoms makers don't use the same materials, shapes and designs. Add this to the notion that the act of sex doesn't always occur in well lit bedrooms. Sometimes it's in the back seat of car in a dark parking lot, or a back room at a club, or *insert unconventional location here* ...and the people about to do the deed, well sometimes they partake of this stuff called alcohol! (maybe even other substances) Turns out this sauce adversely affects perception, motor skills, things like that.

Apparently there are circumstances that can interfere with the proper use of a condom. Just ask any sex ed teacher or social worker who deals with the topic, you'd be amazed at the level of stupidity younger males drop to in order to chase tail.
Malfunctions even happen to smart, mature guys. A roomie of mine back in the day went through a horribly drawn out pregnancy scare because he let his girl "do the honors" one night. The condom eventually broke because she wasn't paying attention.

I know it should be pretty straight forward deal, but the sad truth is it ain't.

For those saying you can't put them on wrong, I've put on condoms inside out in the past and they went on pretty much the same. Maybe Myth Busters needs to do a show on this.

I support this, especially if the lovely Kari takes the lead for that testing!

Sorry to bum you out with common sense and personal experience. Probably for the best, my desire to inform you expired with that last post. Not sure I have the drive to type out some amusing yet depressing stories from Baltimore where my wife worked as a social worker, or those from her mother the nurse.

I'm going to try that if I can get my hands on some nitroglycerin gel or spray. Ironically, one of the common side-effects of almost all vasodilators is diminished sex drive and short-term erectile problems.

Let us know your results of your homemade viagra condom. The article said the "hard" part (hehe) was getting gel to stay inside the condom and not lead out. Maybe spray would work better?

I actually thought of trying to market nitroglycerin paste for this purpose, but didn't think using a condom as a vehicle. ingenious

wtf? how?

correct way:
Your hand is on the outside of the condom and it rolls down.

backward way:
Your fingers would need to be inside the condom to roll it down.

How could anyone possibly fuck this up, we will never know.

common sense? if you put it on backwards, you cannot roll it down easily...It's not my fault that your wife deals with people with no common sense.

... how the hell do you put on condoms incorrectly? The way it's stored in the package indicates it goes a certain way to begin with... once you open it from the wrapper I mean. WTF!
