Don't think it's a repost, at least not in GHW.

Ace's Hardware
Now the questions is, which is worse, "Quantispeed", "Netburst", or "Coolstream".
They really ought to fire the people who came up with these lame names.

hahahahaha

well they claim it is 20% faster than the previous core
so..... what's that make it 50% slower than a P3 at the same clock hahaha

I think Via could stand to make a lot of money off potential upgraders if they had the fastest performing socket 370 cpu
I do like the fact that is has sse support but that only goes so far

I like the fact that they're cool(as in not hot, not as in "WOW"), and inexpensive.
One of VIA's ITX mobos that come with the CPU soldered on, and an ITX chassi would make a kickass cheap firewall for home use.

I get the impression a lot of you didnt read the whole article....
Notice however that VIA claims up to 73% higher 3D Graphics performance compared to the C3 "Ezra". It is no wonder because the new VIA C3 processor finally has an FPU that runs at full speed. If you take a look here, you will see that the raw FPU power of the C3 chip was clock for clock at about 30% of the PIII FPU. A full speed, slightly improved FPU should be able to deliver 60 to 75% of the PIII FPU. Together with SSE, the new improved branch prediction, the C3 is finally ready to power an ultra silent DVD box. But will it be enough to decode DIVX movies with AC3 encoding?

That clip sure looked tasty! :p :D
That AND runs cool temperatures! Imagine running with just a big heatsink! All you'd need is a quiet drive to go with it....

Wow, 1GHz and only 10 Watts? Now maybe they could also improve the general performance of it, maybe just to the levels of a Thunderbird processor.

I don't really think that would be needed.

What they would need though, is a bit more exposure(sp?) in the press, having some tier one vendor sell boxes with them, etc.
People who run Office and such don't need anything as powerful as a TBird, let alone a TBred/Northy, but they sure could use cheaper, smaller, queter computers though, just as I could use a small and quiet computer for my firewall.
My current FW box(old HP Kayak) ain't too bad, it's a midsized desktop that looks fairly fancy and is relatively quiet, but I'd love to trade it for an ITX box that's even smaller, and almost completely silent.

Well, I thought that one of the problems of the C3 was that it was not 100% i386 compatible, so that some code would crash on it.

I hope they fixed that.
Mmmm, quiet. Actually, in my opinion the optical drives do really need some quieting down in computers. Especially - there is no need to spin to full speed just to read the contents (Windows does this all the time, grr).

AFAIK all VIA processors have been 100% x86 (not 386) compatible. If something crashes on it, it's probably software's fault.

i seem to remember a faulty TSC on an old via proc. it said it was there, but it didn't function properly, so if you used the TSC to timing values, it would be way off..

Do they have a mobile one? That'd be great for a laptop... esp if all someone is gonna do is officey type stuff, internet, etc. Nothing worse than an overheating laptop IMO.

yeah, its beyond ridiculous to use flash for graphs in a hardware review. i didnt even read it after i saw that.

I just threw away a C3 700mhz and 800mhz not too long ago, which cost me 72 buck all together. that's one lesson from a cooled cpu that say good enough for surfing, light gaming, etc. heck, even celeron 366 or lesser would do that and better too! It ran like K6 233mhz or K6 266mhz! bahahahaha! anyway, I am upgrading to celeron FCPGA2 1.2GH Tuatualin for a mere 43 bucks! can Via beat that??? I will try overclocking to 1.6gh, making it fly like a rocket, strapped with an extra booster. don't believe those benchmark from VIA! they are optimized just for that particular benchmark or maybe fake?

For it to be THAT slow, user error needs to be intoduced. :frown:
But it'll be no Quake machine one way or the other. STILL better than a K6-2 chip though....
