VIA to aid US

I came across this piece of news earlier this morning and it really struck a cord with me. The Taipei Times, a Taiwan newspaper, is reporting that VIA has offered to donate $100 million USD in the form of cash or relief materials to aid in the cleanup in the aftermath of the New York and Washington DC attacks. I think that it is wonderful for Wen-chi to extend such a generous helping hand in a time of crisis.

Please post your words of support in this thread, thanking Wen-chi and all the caring people who work at VIA.

EDIT The correct amount of money donated is US $1 million USD, not $100 million. Reguardless of the funding, however, any contribution is more than generous.

Mad props to VIA for this!! That's a huge chunk of change that dwarfs even Microsoft's contribution...and they're not even an American company. I salute you VIA!!!

wow! So, I'm fairly certain the WTC was insured... who gets that? Is an insurance company going to be bankrupted?

WOW, what a generous contribution. It is nice to know we can count on our Taiwanese friends during our times of crisis. We helped them tremedously after their earthquake, it is nice to see that generocity returned. Kudos to VIA

hungrypete, can't find the link right now but I read only 1 of the towers was insured because it was inconceivable that both could be brought down.

An amazing offer by VIA though.

WOW!

Thank you to Wen-chi and VIA for thier AMAZING generosity.

Perhaps this will SHAME Microsoft into making a REAL donation.

Shame Microsoft. SHAME.

Even though I don't much care for VIA chipsets (I rather detest them, in fact), I have to respect $100 million.

Very cool, hopefully others will follow suit.

Damn! $100 Mill! Guess they won't have enough to fight Intel's law suit now.

Edit: Hehe...they are bribing future judges with this. Who would side with Intel after this? How much has Intel donated?

GE donated 10 million cash...in the ensuing market, this amount of money is huge...I'm glad a foreign company is doing this for us...you'd better believe the US will hook em up in the future. Again, we've help so many others in the past that I guess we're just due. Every american has helped out cuz alot of our tax money goes into helping the rest of the world too.

Wow, that's a HUGE donation compared to our other Fortune 500 companies. IBM & MS gave 5mil cash each (plus lots of support in other areas). $100Mil seems like a lot to donate for a company in constant battle with intel over patents. If it's true, it's an even more significant offer than we may really understand. Go VIA!

[edit] The news release certainly looks official. I just wonder if it's a misprint, that's why I question it... but, clearly states US$100Mil. Simply AMAZING. [/edit]

Just so Microsoft isn't the only company you're hoping is "shamed" by this:

Coca Cola - $6 million
Cisco - $4 million
GE - $10 million
Microsoft - $5 million

I think it's great that VIA donated that large sum of money, but I don't condemn the other companies for their amounts because they didn't have to donate anything at all. Several smaller companies aren't even donating money, they are donating office space. Don't come down on companies because they aren't spending 50% of their profit to this cause. They do have to remain in business and we should be thankful they donated anything. I'm not sure how VIA came up with the cash to pay this, but I applaude them and the other companies who have donated any amount of money.

I'm sure most of you have donated $10 or $20 or even $100 to the relief fund. What percentage of that money is your income? I'm sure it's not that big of a percentage, but you do have to keep paying bills. If my utilities would forgive my bills for a month or two and donate that money to the fund, I'd be all for it, but you can only spend how much money you can without being out of the street because of it. Don't be ungreatful and condemn these people because you feel their amount is too little. Just be thankful they donated at all because they really didn't have to.

Don't get me wrong (it would be great if it was true), but I highly doubt VIA has anywhere near the resources to donate $100 million. I would really like to see ANY other source that backs this up. Also, I think everybody needs to be appreciative of ANY donation by a company towards this disaster.

Edit: If this were true, this would be BIG headlines and would be posted on all major news sites.
