I have a gigabyte Via Apollo Pro motherboard and a TNT2 Vanta Video card. Upon start-up it is set to 16 colors when I change to 256 or high color it says windows must be restarted even though I have "Apply color settings without restarting selected". When I restart it does a hard lock-up and doesn't load windows then opens (after starting again) in Safe mode. I tried the detonator 3 (6.31) and the detonator 2 (5.22) and tried with and without the Via 4in1 drivers (4.24a was the newest I could find). No difference. Anyone have any idea. Thanks

I would make sure you install the Via drivers first then reboot ,& install monitor drivers ,then Nvidia reference drivers like 6.31,This is how I installed my Nvidia drivers.Check in BIOS you have Fastwrites & video shadowing disabled.

Mem - I looked for that Fastwrites & video shadowing in the Bios but can't find it anywhere. Also I un-installed and re-installed everything in the order you suggested but no change. When it finally reboots I get this message: "THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR DISPLAY SETTINGS. THE ADAPTER TYPE IS INCORRECT OR THE CURRENT SETTINGS DO NOT WORK WITH YOUR HARDWARE". Thanks

go into control panel--> display--> advanced--> adapter--> change
You should have the reference drivers downloaded from nvidia. You should uninstall all video drivers at this point. Now what you do is when you change your adapter use the have disk option. With have disk you can manually select the correct reference drivers on your harddrive. If you don't sometimes windows selects incorrect drivers because it doesn't recognize the reference ones

Krodge is right about making sure any other drivers before are uninstalled however with Nvidia drivers you don`t need to uninstall them when updating,btw I install & update mine through control panel, in systems on display adaptor , select update driver tab,I never get problems this way just make sure you point Windows to the right directory where you downloaded them to since windows is not that smart.
