Err which one do you think has a better price/performance ratio...

Heres the price i will get on either:

p4 1.8a retail and a soyo sis 645 mobo $249
p4 1.8a retail and a via VIA P4X266a mobo $189

Which one do you think will give me the better deal? I've looked at both the 645 benchmarks and the p4266a marks and the margin doesn't seem that big..

Which one would you purchase? Right now, i'm set on going for the via

Don't even hesitate. Grab that SiS 645 (DX would be better) and don't even consider VIA. P4X266 was riddled with issues, "A" isn't much better. And P4X333 is vaporware. (Not that you should consider it either :D)

So the ide raid and the ddr333 support makes the sis 645 worth the extra $60?

I personally won't use the ddr333 and i only have 1 harddrive right now

Err and do ya think the 1.8a is worth the extra $20 over the 1.6a?

uhh and this reviewer from legion hardware thought:
Overall I found the P4X266 to be the better chipset for quite a few reasons. The P4X266 out performed the 645 in every test that wasn?t 100% memory based, providing high-end performance for gamers. The P4X266 has a lot of potential that can be seen in the P4X266A, yet I can still see the chipset going so much further with the introduction of DDR333. Really the only down side to the P4X266 chipset is its availability, which is slowly growing. SiS hasn?t had the 645 out there all that long, yet they have already received more support than VIA. In the end I believe it comes down to what the board offers and how much it costs.

and what are the "issues"? i'm not a suscriber so searching isn't all that quick :)

Forget the Soyo board. It is ridiculously overpriced. Grab an ASUS ... P4S533 would be a good choice.

$260 is a bit out of my price range...i was aiming for $200 initially, and these prices are at a b&m store closeby

But i will allow an alternative...

p4 1.8a retail and a via VIA P4X266a mobo $189 vs. xp1900 with a soyo mobo for $230

Hmmmm. P4X266A, but y not a 845G?

edit: In response to your last post, will you be ocing? If not, the XP 1900+ will be faster than the 1.8A. If you plan on ocing the 1.8A to 2.4B speeds then no doubt the oc'ed 1.8A will topple the 1900+ but otherwise the 1900+ will be faster.

I haven't really looked up an 845g, is it cheap?

Are you seriuos? They're offering you a deal of the century, one heck of a deal! You can get CPU+Mobo at a little more than the price of the CPU itself! Forget what others said about VIA. Once it's so cheap I'd jump in their bandwagon right now with closed eyes! AAIAAIIAEEEE! NOOOOO!!!

VIA.

Sis 645.
However, Intel 845D has AGP/PCI lock, which may be "safer" if running odd speed.

845G has no noticeable performance / benchmark advantage over 845D, therefore, if you want to keep it under $200, I would suggest you check newegg's refurbish 845D. (personally, I have their cheapest refurb Abit BD7, w/ newest BIOS and it has been running perfectly for me. 1.6A@2.3Ghz. )

For some reason my 1.6A needs 1.65V to run at 2.3Ghz, but I like to keep it quiet and cool thus, I have mine running at 2.0Ghz @ 1.55V w/ 125Mhz FSB. AGP/PCI lock it to 33mhz so I am in safe hand. :)

EDIT: Just like to mention I used the be the hardcore EpoX fan until I found they do NOT issue RMA. Before I bought the refurbish ABIT BD7, I purchase a EpoX 4SDA (sis645) from sale forum. After 3 days w/ EpoX, the mobo fried. (I request RMA from EpoX but they turn me down, and state I can only get my RMA from the place I got the EpoX. Of course, it is no way to ask fellow trader to give me his receipt w/ his credit card number on it, is it?)
