I have a compaq p3 500mhz comp at my other house, 400 miles away. So i need to know this information before I go down there.

the compaq has a via mobo. I keep hearing about windows xp incompatibilities with via boards, so I was wondering if it would be ok to install windows xp in my case.....

anyone with an old via comp, feel free to respond....

Don`t know where you heard that, btw XP has built-in VIA driver support ,I`m using a VIA board with XP which runs rock solid,I would recommend you install the lastest VIA 4 in 1 drivers(4.43 is latest at the moment) when you`ve XP installed since the ones built-in with WinXP are old now.

I am not sure if it is a good idea to put winXP on there. It is a tad slow. How much ram is there? Put win2k on instead if must have an NT based OS.

The only incompatibilty with old boards is acpi/power management. Chipset makes no difference.

Maybe this is disguised VIA bashing?
