Via onboard sound help

I'm building a low cost office system for a friend and I'm using a Abit VA6 motherboard I tried a while back. Since this is a cheap system, a sound card is not in the budget and he only needs basic sound anyway, the problem is I can't get the onboard sound to work. Windows detects the PCI audio device and Via's WDM sound drivers are loaded and showing correctly in the device manager but there is no listing in the Multimedia properties, the only offering is Game compatible device. There's no volume control available as well. A regular PCI soundcard works fine.
Any help from someone who's got the OB sound working on this turkey would be greatly appreciated.
