VIA MVP3 chipset and win2k - windows stutters

When I am doing almost anything with my computer win2k will "lock" for a second or two, it gets worse and worse depending on how much I am running. I am unsure on the exact cause of the problem, I am currently running a k6/2-450, epox epmvp3c2, 128mb ram. I have plans on upgrading soon, but would like to find out more information about this problem so that I can figure out an upgrade that will provide me with a noticable performance increase.
