VIA latency patch needed for KT333?

I have an Epox 8K3A+ with an Athlon XP2000+ and Windows XP pro.

Windows seems to have a little lag to it and and will pause for a sec. or two from time time, especially when opening a new app or switching between. It's a clean new load with minimal background apps and services.

I was reading on another thread that the VIA latency patch can help with this sometimes. Is the patch needed on the KT333? I could only find it mentioned with respect to older chipsets like the KT266.

Same annoyance here. New A7V333 / XP1600 /W2k. Installed the newest 4in1 and the Latency patch, but still have the same delay.

Turn off QOS crap and make sure you have at least 256MB of RAM.

breese patch is not supported for the KT333 as per his FAQ. Tried it, no changes.

Are you using AUTO for the IDE settings in BIOS, or is it set to NONE on the empty slots? This makes a difference in some VIA systems for some reason. It makes your drive kick down to PIO mode4 which is very CPU intensive.

Users of XP need to turn off QOS (quality of service) packets to prevent saturation of your PCI bus to this b.s. load on the NIC.

Use the AUTO position for all 4 device slots.

A few questions for you:

1. Are you using built-in sound or an add-on card?
2. Are you using the IDE channels in RAID?
3. What type of NIC are you using?
4. What type of videocard are you using, and is it in the AGP port?
5. What other add-on cards are in use?
6. What is the EXACT version of VIA 4-in-1 drivers you installed? ...and what specific options did you install?

1. Did you use the onboard sound driver from the 4-in-1 pack?
2. good, helps isolate the problem
3. Take the 3c905 out and try it without it in. I know that 3Com cards sometimes have a hardcoded register problem with the VIA chipsets. There is no patch for that if this is the case. But I'd like you to isolate the NIC from the system, especially knowing its a 3Com.
4. Did you use the newer detonator 30.82 drivers, or the older ones?
5. shouldn't be a problem
6. Did you use the TURBO mode for AGP or the standard? If you have agp Fast Writes Enable in your BIOS, disable it. If you have it disabled, enable it. (If everything works keep it enabled.) Use 'Manual' agp Driving Control setting and set it to "A8h". (If the system goes unstable try "BAh" or "CCh". Use the most stable setting.) What were your IDE choices you made when you installed the drivers?

1-Using the audio drivers from ASUS website - V5.12.01.0629
3-removed NIC, no change
4-29.42 vid drivers from NVIDIA site
6-Changed to enable fast write/AGP. Seems to have cured the lag.
6-Played with the Driving control-no real changes. Fast write seems to have have done it. Just need alittle time to test it, but it looks good now.

I started this thread but have been too busy to respond ^_^

Thanks for the tips and advice. I'll try them as soon as I can (I'm int he middle of a big project right now and my system has been encoding video almost non-stop. I can't afford to stop right now. Number crunching seems to go at an OK rate even though XP is very sluggish and laggy.

I did have QOS running which I have just now shut off. I have an old Matrox Marvel G400 (AGP2x), not sure what fast-write needs to be set at. I'll check and try the opposite of what it's at.

I'm using the latest 4-in-1 drivers (4.38 I think?)

I"m using the integrated audio, but can't remember where the drivers for it came from ^_^ I"ve been to pre-occupied with the video I need to get encoded for my project.

I've always built my own systems and been able to deal with the issues. But right now I wish I had just gotten a P4 like I wanted rather than trying to save a few bucks ...

I'll post again after I can check version numbers and try some things.

PS, I do have a 3com "3CSOHO" ethernet card. Not sure which chipset it's based on. I can easily swap it with the nic in my other system (PIII).

I removed the QOS scheduler and noticed an immediate difference. My system was more responsive and less "laggy."

I installed the latest 4-in-1 drivers from Viaarena.com (4in1 4.40(a)P3.zip) and I installed the latest IDE Miniport driver from the same site which replaced the MS provided driver that my system was using.

I left AGP fast write disabled in BIOS.

Now my system feels pretty normal. I need to use it a bit. I tend to have serveral heavy weight apps like Photoshop and AfterEffects open at once while I have an mpeg encoder going in the BG. My previous PIII on a BX motherboard was always quick and responsive, even under a heavey load like that. Hopefully my Epox 83ka+/Athlon XP2000+ system will be like that now!
